Boise State cited for major violations in track

The case included numerous major violations involving more than 75 prospects and student-athletes in five sports over the course five years. The involved sports included football, men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, and men’s and women’s tennis. The vast majority of the violations found by the committee were agreed upon by the university. A former assistant track coach was found for unethical conduct.A former assistant track coach was cited for unethical conduct in the recruitment of a prospective student-athlete. After an unofficial visit by the prospective student-athlete, the former coach provided the prospect with a check to partially reimburse travel expenses in relation to the trip. During the formal investigation by the university, the former track coach provided false or misleading information on three occasions. The penalties, some of which were self-imposed by the university and adopted by the committee, include

  • Two-year show-cause order for the former assistant track coach. The public report details these conditions.
  • Reduction of men’s and women’s track and field scholarships by 1.5 equivalencies from the average annual amount awarded the past four years during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years (self-imposed by the university).

What the PAC-10 gained in track when it added Utah and Colorado

the Pac-10 got little. Utah does not have a men’s track program, and until last year they did not have a track. The Utes do now, but their brand-new McCarthy Family Track Complex has a grand total of zero seats. Colorado brings massively successful cross country programs, but the winter and spring doesn’t see a whole lot in the way of whole-team track success, home meets, or fan turnout.

MV Notes for September 15

This week we added pole runs on the runway and 3,4,5 step runs into the pits.  Tyler: Again, you run is not a problem this year.  Your plant is still a fraction late.  When it is on you will feel the difference. You will feel the power of the pole and you will be able to rock back quicker.  It will come.  Drills like curb plants, pole runs and counting, cones to help you start your plant…all will work.  Also, time to start getting stronger for the season.  Will:  Like the work ethic.  We need to add some more running to get in shape and lose a few.  Your run is much, much faster than last year.  Time to get off that 50.  Your jump is amazing. Under a bit, but you were tired.  Need to work a bit on the last three steps.  Should be an amazing season ahead.   And finally the weather is cooling off!

Rio 2016: Is Brazil Going to be Ready for the Olympics?

Out on the far west side of Rio de Janeiro, in a zone where a host of Summer Olympics events will take place five years from now, stands a great example of how to plan for a major sporting event. And how not to. On one hand, there is the Athletes’ Park, an $18 million 1.3 million-sq.-ft. (123,000 sq m) space for competitors’ relaxation between events. Formally opened in July, the park was delivered early, on budget and will be a “legacy venue” that the general public can use before and after the 2016 Olympics. But just a few miles away is the 970,000-sq.-ft. (90,000 sq m) Pan village, built to house athletes during the 2007 Pan American Games. Today, almost four years after the athletes moved out and Brazilian residents moved in, part of the village and the roads around it have caved in, sunk by the effects of haphazard, last-minute construction.

Doha ready to host top athletics event

Doha have all the infrastructure in place to successfully host the 2017 world athletics championships, the president of the Qatar bid committee said here on Friday ahead of the final Diamond league meet of 2011.

Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that it would be a “new frontier” in world sport for the top Olympic sport to be held in the Middle East.

Doha already have the venue- the Khalifa Stadium – while bid rivals London were not certain of maintaining the athletics track constructed for the 2012 Olympics, he said.

The IAAF will announce the host city in Monaco on November 11.

It’s all about the weight room says vaulter/football player

DANVILLE — The weight room is the lifeline for all sports. Getting bigger and stronger is vital to all athletes and it proved to be the difference in being a starter and bench warmer for Cirron Clark.

A year ago, Danville coach B.J. Luke wanted the 5-foot, 8-inch Clark to start at the “Willie” outside linebacker position. Being a senior, it means a lot more to me,’’ Clark said. “I wasn’t as physical as I’ve been this year.’’

But, how did he get more physical?

“It’s a mentality,’’ he said. “First off, you have to leave it all on the field every game and you have to know that no one is tougher than you.

“It also helps when you hit the weight room really hard in the offseason.’’

Getting into the weight room last January also paid dividends in Clark’s other sport, track and field.

He set the Danville High indoor record with a jump of 13 feet, 6 inches and he qualified for state with a jump of 13-9.

“It’s all about the weight room,’’ he said. “When you do well in there, you can jump higher and farther.

“It also gets you strong enough to hit harder.’’
