Former U. of Arizona vaulter no heights at Pan Ams

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The U.S. women’s field hockey and women’s water polo teams clinched berths in the 2012 Olympics by winning Pan American Games gold medals Friday.

The U.S. upset world champion Argentina 4-2 in field hockey. The water polo team beat Canada 19-18 in a marathon shootout after the teams tied at 8-8 in regulation.

• Jeronimo Amione’s goal in the 75th minute gave Mexico a 1-0 win over Argentina and the men’s soccer gold medal.

• The U.S. men lost to Uruguay 82-80 but still earned the top seed in men’s nbasketball Group B. The Americans play Mexico in the semifinals today.

• Former Arizona Wildcat Nick Mossberg missed all three attempts at his initial height in the men’s pole vault.
