Vault Coach has Heart-attack scare

PALEMBANG, Malaysia: The Malaysian contingent suffered yet another heart attack scare when pole vault coach Mohd Mansahar Abdul Jalil collapsed during breakfast at the Athletes’ Village yesterday morning.

The 51-year-old Mansahar, who has been coaching top woman pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu since the start of her career, clutched his chest in pain and fainted at 7.30am.

He was treated by the medical team at the Athletes’ Village and taken to a hospital for further treatment.

Team manager Rajemah Sheikh Ahmad said that Mansahar was in stable condition and could recover in time for the pole vault event, which starts on Tuesday.

men’s track & field scholarships cut at Fresno State

Fresno State will begin eliminating scholarships for its men’s track and field team and cut more than half of its equestrian scholarships in budget-tightening moves, school administrators confirmed Thursday.

The athletic department is expected to save $300,000 within the next three to four years through attrition as part of the university’s effort to cut its budget across the board. All athletes currently on scholarship in the two programs will have their scholarships honored.

Lewis: Bleasdale to star at 2012 Games

United Kingdom –Despite fluffing her lines in spectacular style on her major senior international debut this summer, British pole vaulter Steve Lewis believes team-mate Holly Bleasdale can be the star of next year’s Olympics.

Lewis, who claimed silver at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year, and Bleasdale were part of a British trio that jetted off to the World Championships in Daegu in August.

After claiming a new British record of 4.70m and the European U23 title in the build up to her South Korean adventure, Bleasdale was tipped by many as an outside medal chance.

Thursday’s Practice

Perhaps the best practice so far.  Cole: great having you join us from Washington. You are a strong junior weighing in at 175 and have a fast run.  Last year you said your best was 11-6.  After a few preliminaries…warm up and one arms, you worked on the rock back and got what to do with your legs.  Your swing was straight and controlled.  Nice job of picking up on that quickly.  Toni: Nice to have a girl in our midst.  You were a changed person from last week.  You have forgotten most of your bad habits.  This practice was concentrated on the swing-rock back and you pretty much mastered that.  Need to remember to keep that head down but you controlled the pole and landed right in the middle where you are supposed to.  Super job.  Jeff:  It must have been the head wind.  It was a good wind for everyone.  You are a different vaulter than last year or last week.  It’s nice to be stronger and able to run so fast….so fast…like a missile… that you have to remember to plant early…which you did almost every time.  We need a bit more work on the swing but you are almost there.  Tyler:  This year you are so coordinated.  You know what your body is doing every time you are on the runway.  Your run could be faster but your jump and your swing is getting you quite vertical.  Just remember to jump before you swing and the season will be amazing.  Framarz:  I knew you would be big time.  At this practice you only once did that pull thing….You are feeling how to swing and control that pole and you are getting vertical deep in the pit.  Nice.  Just a few more practices on that and we will add a good turn and you are there.  It’s going to be a super year.   Devon:  Coach Raper and the other coaches on campus are talking about this 6 foot frosh that is strong and coordinated.  Will he do basketball or what?  Well he will do the 100, 400, high jump and pole vault in track…that’s what.  Your run is fast and strong.  Your plant still can be a bit taller…Still have a week or two on the swing…need to concentrate on legs not arms on that swing.  But soon…very soon…you will be a second or third year vaulter in your first month.  You are high enough to clear 9 feet on your third practice. Nice.   Will:  What can I say…strong run…strong plant….I’m inpatient though.  Want you to work a bit harder.  That means concentrating on a strong jump and swing…not taking the easy small pole way out.  You have plenty of time but its time….You took that huge 15-6 carbon and did stiff pole on it.  It worked fine.  Now let’s get going on full runs with big poles.
