Sebastian Coe got what he wanted, Bubka didn’t

Lord Sebastian Coe’s smile was wide while that on the face of fellow IAAF vice president Sergey Bubka was somewhat wry as they embraced after London’s acquisition of the 2017 world athletics championships on Monaco. London’s victory over Doha is another personal triumph for Coe, almost certainly sealing his future presidency of the sport’s world governing body after next year’s Olympics. For his main rival is the former Ukrainian pole vault legend whose own hopes of succeeding Lamine Diack have all but but vanished, so high is Coe’s profile in global sport after going for bust in Monte Carlo. Some believe Coe, who has Fifa experience, should have been recruited to aid England’s disastrous football World Cup bid. As he says: “I don’t think English football has enough people of influence at the highest level of the game internationally. In track and field and the Olympic world we clearly now do. Football doesn’t really punch its weight in those corridors

Thailand claimed gold in the men’s pole vault

JAKARTA AND PALEMBANG —Thailand claimed gold in the men’s pole vault at the South East Asian Games. Kreetha Sintawacheewa was successful in the men’s pole vault at the Jakabaring Athletic Stadium in Palembang.

The 21-year-old managed 5.10m while J. Karthik and Nguyen Dang Duc Ba came in second and third respectively.

“I am happy to win my second successive gold medal,” said Kreetha who also grabbed gold in Laos two years ago.

“But I am disappointed that I failed to break my SEA Games record of 5.21m set in Laos.”

Interview: Megan McClain, Columbus, Ohio

Q: You also are a pole-vaulter, the scariest event in track. You are up there in the air.

A: I was a gymnast until I was 14 years old, and I was told the pole vault might be suited to me. It can be a scary event.

Q: Ever have a pole break on you?

A: Not yet. But a teammate had one snap. He was OK.

Q: What are you thinking about when you are in the air? Your feet are pointing upward and your head is pointing to the ground.

A: All you can think about (are mechanics) and getting over the bar. I did have a hip avulsion (where a fragment of bone is torn from the major bone mass through stress). I was out for six months. I was jumping in the Mid-State League meet when it happened during warmups. The pain was horrible. I landed face-first in the pit and was crying. I was carried away. I had tendonitis. I had to let the injury heal by itself. I didn’t have surgery. When I came back, I was worried about the injury happening again. I had to get over that part. It was so mental.

Q: Pole-vaulters are crazy.

A: I’m an average pole-vaulter. I go 9 feet, 6 inches. Others go 2 feet higher. That makes me feel like a baby.
