North Carolina Vaulters are are Blue Men

UNC’s ‘Blue Men’ among the football team’s loudest, most energetic fans

They’re hard to miss, the Blue Men.

Decked out in blue full-body spandex suits, hats flipped backward, sunglasses and UNC blue-colored kicks, North Carolina junior vaulters Chadd Pierce and Pete Rehder have been chanting and cheering for UNC football since the start of last school year.

Inspired by Charlie Day’s “Green Man” character in the FX sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” Pierce asked Rehder if he would be interested in adopting a similar persona at UNC’s home opener last season.

3 Holiday Recipes From US Athletes

With the holiday season upon us, it’s probably safe to assume that athletes are indulging in festive treats as much as the next person. So we asked three US athletes what recipes they like to whip up in the winter months. Here are their answers – complete with step-by-step instructions – so you can make them for yourself. Just don’t forget to give credit when someone asks where you learned to make those healthy morning meals or that decadent dessert

Track and field athlete Lolo Jones’ “Lo Squared Holiday Oatmeal”

Ice dancer Maia Shibutani’s favorite “Homestyle Chocolate Cake”

Gymnast Brandon Wynn’s “Breakfast Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Squares”

Preview: Duke Multi’s and Vault

Along with the teams youth they also have a lot of experience going into this season.  Last year, Curtis Beach, school record holder in points for the heptathlon and decathlon, garnered outdoor first team all-america honors and indoor second team all-american honors in the multi-events. On the women’s side, Amy Fryt, two time outdoor All-ACC and three time indoor All-ACC in the pole vault, also obtained indoor second team all-america honors.

Coach Wilbourn is excited for this spring and is hopeful in the contributions that his student-athletes can contribute to the team score. Some of the goals he has for 2012 include, “improving on our scoring output in indoor ACC’s and hopefully to get a couple of them qualified for NCAA’s.  Moving into outdoors, I think that is where we will really make some noise because the freshmen have had some time to develop.  By the time we get to Outdoor ACC’s they should be able to score quite a few points.”

Key Returners: Justin Amezquita (pole vault), Curtis Beach (multi-events), Tony Shirk (pole vault),   Amy Fryt (pole vault),  Amber Kunze (pole vault), Emily Mattoon (pole vault)

Newcomers:    Ian Rock (multi-events),   Olivia Bergesen (pole vault),  Daryn Howland (mult-events), Karli Johonnot (multi-events),   Teddi Maslowski (multi-events), Baily Murphy (pole vault),   Stephanie Skove (pole vault), and Sonora Williams (multi-events).

News Briefs

England–pole vaulter Andrew Sutcliffe  is one of Six Olympic hopefuls are to share in a £3,000 windfall courtesy of Tameside Council. The money has been provided by Manchester International Airport.  We see these youngsters as Tameside’s best hopes for the 2012 London Olympics and I’m delighted to be able to help them.

While many of the athletes are not expecting to compete in London, several have spoken to us of their plans for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Olympics.

Maryland plans to cut eight sports to save money: Men’s sports are cross country, track and field, tennis, swimming and diving.  Women’s sports include water polo, acrobatics and tumbling, swimming and diving.  Effective date is June 30, 2012.
