Not going to look back on 2011. That’s history. What we learned this week. Tyler Cone had another great vault camp in Florida at Pole Vault City. The coaches prediction was 13 to 13-6 very soon and Tyler can do a one fingered pull up. Now if it was only an Olympic contest. Winter Camps in Phoenix were hampered by high school schedules that produced this past week as the only week every one had off from school. So, Todd’s Camp and Nick’s Camp were held at the same time. Will Hooper chose to go to Nick’s camp that also featured Jeff Hartwig returning from last year. As usual the weather was perfect. I was impressed that Jeff took Will aside and did a lot of individual coaching. Continue reading

Helena Montana says goodbye to vault icon
Helena High coaching icon, Doug “Old Man” LeBrun passed away in 2011.
LeBrun, 74, was the architect of one of the most successful pole vaulting programs in the region. During his 26-year tenure as Helena High’s vault coach, he mentored 14 state champions, two all-class record holders and eight 15-foot vaulters.
LeBrun operated a nationally renowned summer pole vault camp at his home in the valley for over 20 years.
A member of both the Montana Coaches Association and Helena Sports Halls of Fame, “Old Man” received the U.S. Pole Vault Committee’s Outstanding Service Award, and the Jeff Turman Pole Vault Summit-ship Award.
Harper, 88, was a passionate supporter of local athletics since his family first moved to Helena in the late 1950s.
He started coaching Helena High’s pole vaulters in the mid-1960s, and went on to assist LeBrun every summer until his passing.
LeBrun, who graduated from Ronan High in 1954 and attended the University of Montana on a baseball scholarship, operated a nationally renowned summer pole vault camp at his ranch in the Helena valley. During the past 25 years, he coached thousands of local and statewide vaulters, as well as numerous others from six different states.
He was presented the 2006 U.S. Pole Vaulting committee’s national “Outstanding Service to Pole Vaulting” award, and in 2010 he received the “Jeff Truman Memorial Pole Vault Summit-ship” award.
During his travels to the various camps around the country, LeBrun cultivated personal friendships with the likes of Olympians Tim Mack and Stacy Dragila.
“The kids called him ‘Old Man,’ ” and he was the old man of the pole vault community — not just for Montana, but for the entire nation,” said Harper, who helped LeBrun for four decades.
“He could be rough in spots, but he had a heart of gold, and there never would’ve been any pole vault camps or tournaments around here without him.”
LeBrun started teaching freshmen P.E. at Helena Junior High in 1973, and moved over to Helena High in 1979 when it became a four-year school.
During his 32-year tenure as a Helena High assistant track coach, he instructed eight 15-foot vaulters. His prize jewels were all-class record holders Todd Foster and Shannon Agee.
Cursing in sports: Fair or foul?
Indiana –If you’ve been near the sideline of a high school sporting event or at a practice, you just might have heard an exchange like this:
“Danny! If you don’t keep your man off the boards, your *&%#$% is going to be on the *&%#$% bench!”
Coaches have been getting after players since moments after the position was created. What seems to have changed, however, is the frequency of the *&%#$%.
Cursing is increasingly prevalent in society and has long been a part of college and professional sports, but some educators are concerned that foul language is being heard more often from coaches at the high school level, especially with boys. Continue reading
