A.E. Gilbert inventor of the American Flyer toy trains was an olympic vaulter
HAMDEN — Like families who trek up to the attic to bring down the Christmas ornaments and decorations, the Eli Whitney Museum reaches into its attic to unpack its annual nostalgia trip back into New Haven history — the A.C. Gilbert Company American Flyer Trains exhibition.
This year’s exhibit, which runs through Jan. 15, features the sturdy AF trains in interactive exhibits, where children (and the big kids, too) can man the throttle of the trains which were a tradition under the tree for Christmases nationwide, but which only New Haven can lay claim to as their birthplace.
Admission is free. And, in keeping with The Whitney’s ongoing mission to inspire creativity and invention, kits to build wooden trains with magnetic couplers are available for young visitors for $9.
The exhibit, which this year is dedicated to the late Realtor Herb Pearce, is open Saturdays at the 915 Whitney Ave. museum from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sundays from noon-5 p.m.
The trains, produced at the company whose buildings are now the Erector Square artists’ enclave, were the pride and joy of inventor Alfred Carlton Gilbert. Known for their life-like movements, sound, lights, and even “the cedar scent of their smoke,” they were part of the legacy of the A.C. Gilbert Co., which was known as the premier producer “of learning toys in the world” during its glory days between 1909 and 1964.
The museum bases some of its programming on the Gilbert Hall of Science, which was located in the company’s New York showroom — a place which many consider the forerunner of today’s science museums.
At the museum, visitors will also learn about the history of Gilbert, who went to Yale and was an Olympic gold medal pole vaulter in the 1908 Olympics.
He earned living expenses by performing magic, sometimes on the train toNew York, which is when he got the inspiration for his famed Erector Set toys — metal pieces with which children could produce their own skyscrapers and bridges — which, preceded his final great invention, the American Flyer Trains.
