Can Isinbayeva Strike Olympic Gold in 2012?

One of the intriguing questions heading into the Olympic year of 2012 revolves around the women’s pole vault. Yelena Isinbayeva is the two-time defending Olympic champion. Indeed, she set world records while earning gold medals in 2004 and 2008. But track and field fans know her recent story well. After dominating women’s pole vault for five years, Isinbayeva no-heighted at the 2009 World Championships and hasn’t won a world title since. Anna Rogowska won the World Championship in 2009, while Fabiana Murer won the 2010 World Indoor Championship and the 2011 outdoor World Championship. But neither Rogowska nor Murer came close. Isinbayeva – who’ll be 30 this summer, hardly over the hill for a pole vaulter – is a three-time winner of the IAAF Athlete of the Year award

2012 High School Rule Changes

In Rule 7-5-2, requirements for pole vault competitors were changed. The rule

eliminates the limit of only two layers of tape on the grip end but still requires any tape

placed on the pole to be of uniform thickness on the grip end.

In addition, Rule 7-5-25 clarifies who may touch or catch the pole and under

what circumstances touching the pole is not allowed. The rule reads, “No person shall

be allowed to touch the vaulting pole except an assigned official, assigned pole catcher

or the competitor, when circumstances warrant, but never to prevent the pole from

dislodging the bar.” “The competitor or designated official can catch the pole, but the touch or catch by the competitor that prevents the crossbar from being dislodged is still a foul,”

Obit: Former Vaulter from Iowa

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — William “Bill” Vlieger, 54, formerly of Sioux Center passed away early on Dec. 24, 2011 at his home in Houston, Texas, surrounded by family after a two-year battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Wiesner and Massart Funeral Home in Casco, Wis.

Bill was born in Sioux Center on Oct. 13, 1957, to Bill and Sylvia (Vander Tuig) Vlieger. In Sioux Center, Bill grew up causing a bit more mischief than other teenage boys, but worked hard in school excelling in both academics and track and field. Bill graduated from Sioux Center High School, where he set multiple track records. After graduating, Bill stayed in Sioux Center to pursue a degree in accounting at Dordt College on an academic scholarship. Despite his scholarship, he worked his way through college, continued his passion for track and field, and tirelessly supported his new family including two young children. Running track at Dordt, Bill continued to set records including a pole vaulting record of 13′ 6″ that stood for 28 years.

Pole vault star aiming high for Olympic gold

Rising sports star Katie Byres has her sights set on next year’s Olympics after setting a new pole vaulting record.

Katie, 18, has broken the UK junior under-20s indoor pole vault record after jumping four metres and 16 centimetres at a recent competition.

The height smashed the previous record by two centimetres at the French elite pole vault series in Orleans.

But the determined teenager is still aiming higher in preparation for London 2012.

Katie, from Hadfield, said: “It was great to break the record in my first competition and off a short run up.
