Practice video and quick update

Thought Id upload a few videos of practice yesterday, my good friend Adam Pierson came down from Chicago for a few days and gave me a couple of things to work on. Adam is originally from Bourbonnais, Illinois which is the same town as ONU where I went to college. He vaulted at University of Illinois and moved to Texas training as a post collegiate, Adam helped me out a ton in my first years out of college. He noticed that right after takeoff I needed to push upwards more, so we tried it out yesterday at practice and it really seemed to make a difference in opening up the bend of the pole allowing me to be in a better position as the pole unbends.

Im opening my season this weekend at Grand Valley State University up in Allendale, Michigan on Friday. Im really excited to bring it full speed and see how the changes Ive been working on make a difference on some big poles.

Notes: Run work on the runway works

January 11, 2012 — Arizona Puma meeting tonight at 5:30 at Glendale Public Library.  The club season is beginning and the high school season is too. Tyler came to yesterday’s practice; still with a hip injury but he did a great job coaching Framarz on the run and plant and filming and coaching Framarz and Will.  Framarz did a super job working on the run.  He and Will first did some low hurdle drills and then some box drills on the track.  They moved it over to the runway and Framarz flew down the runway with a strong and even 7 step.  Tyler worked with him a bit on the plant but the main emphasis was on the run.  Framarz is going to have a super year with that great, great run.  Will also worked on his run.  Getting on big poles requires Will to be faster at the plant.  The seven step worked out perfectly and he really jumped and flew; first on some 14′s and then on a light 15.  A great practice for Framarz and Will.  They learned a lot and really, really are improving.   Up next is Thursday’s practice…more of the same and Will has a meet at the Air Force Academy this sunday.

Slowly does it for Lavillenie on road to recovery

Two-time world pole vault bronze medallist Renaud Lavillenie is still two weeks away from resuming training with a pole as he recovers from surgery on his fractured left hand.

Lavillenie went under the knife early last month after a training accident, but a meeting Wednesday with the surgeon who carried out the procedure didn’t see him leave with the green light for full training.

“After examining the X-ray, the surgeon was happy with the ongoing knitting of the fracture but you could still see the fracture line,” said Lavillenie, the 2010 European champion who will be among the favourites for the world indoors in Istanbul in March.

“He’s now authorised me to use my hand ‘normally’, so I can resume weight training, exercises on the fixed bar etc, but not the pole.

“I’ve still got two weeks without the pole so as to not overburden the bone. A tough wait but a necessary one so the bone sets 100 percent solid.”

Girls Athlete of the Week: Vaulter Maggie Rampolla

Baltimore, Maryland — Despite suffering from tonsillitis, the senior pole vaulter set a meet record by clearing 11 feet, 3 inches Saturday to win the Montgomery Invitational title. Rampolla returned to the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex Sunday for an unsanctioned all-comers meet and cleared 11 feet, 6 inches — a personal best. By comparison, 11 feet 3 would have won a state public school title in all four classifications last winter. A former Level 8 gymnast who began pole vaulting as a freshman, the 5-foot-2 Rampolla is the defending IAAM champion indoors and a three-time IAAM champion outdoors. She qualified for the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships last summer after competing with the DC Vault club but opted not to make the trip. Rampolla, who plays soccer for the Lions, also competes in the long jump, triple jump and 800-meter relay. She had a 3.85 GPA last semester and is drawing attention from such college programs as Clemson, Maryland, Tennessee and Tulane.

Two School Record Holders Added to Track & Field Staff

PHILADELPHIA – School record holders Tuan Wreh, C’02, and Samantha Crook, were both added to the University of Pennsylvania track and field staff on Wednesday. Wreh holds two school records, while Crook stands as the only female athlete in program history to pass four meters in the pole vault.

“We are very fortunate to have two former Quakers, who both love this University and the Penn track and field programs, come back to coach at their alma mater,” said interim men’s track and field head coach Robin Martin, who was instrumental in adding the two former Penn standouts to the staff.

Crook, the indoor and outdoor school record holder in the pole vault, has served as a volunteer assistant coach at Penn since 2005. She will work primarily with the men’s and women’s pole vaulters and will also assist with the sprinters and jumpers. Wreh will work with the men’s jumpers, while also assisting with the sprinters.

Crook initially set the school record in the outdoor pole vault as a freshman in 2002 and has held the program’s indoor and outdoor top marks since 2003. A four-time letterwinner, Crook won the ECAC outdoor title in 2005 and reached the 2005 Outdoor NCAA Championships where she surpassed the four-meter mark. In addition, she finished in the top two at the Heptagonal Championships five times.
