Notes: Weekend of Meets
1/17/12 — So Will Hooper went to Colorado Springs for the Air Force High School Open..beautiful indoor facility. 21 male vaulters competed starting at 10 am on Sunday. Will took 8 poles with him but …surprise…surprise they had weigh ins and he didn’t have a pole he could use. Will weighed 175 and the only pole he had he could use was a 1380. Fortunately he made friends with Matt Hull, Greg Hull’s son, who coaches in New Mexico and was at the Air Force Academy with his dad doing a week’s vault work. Matt knew the Air Force Coach and they lent Will a 1475. Will opened at 11-0 on his 1380…passed 11-6…on the borrowed pole cleared 12,12-6,13-13-6 and 14 on first attempts. He ran out of pole at 14-6. So…Will came in second; learned how to handle last minute pressure..realized he has a super fast run…knows what he needs to work on and made a new coaching guru…Matt Hull. Bottom line: well worth the trip. Meanwhile…at NAU in the first Arizona indoor meet of the season, Dylan Austin in his second vault year with ASU cleared a respectable 15-6 for his first meet. ASU junior college transfer Derek Hinch was the highest ASU vaulter at 16-11 1/2 . Arizona’s top High School vaulters made their debut for the year at the meet too. Number one ranked Garrett Starkey vaulted 15′ 11.75″, his PR is 16-5. Number 2 Arizona Vaulter and a junior, Grant Sisserson cleared 15-0, tying his PR. Next came Matt Arseneau and Scott Marshall at 14-6. Aiden Foster no heighted. Arizona’s top preps had a very respectable first meet. Next up for us is practice WEDNESDAY after school and then the Pole Vault Summit this weekend.

Sally Peake sets Welsh pole vault record

Welsh pole vaulter Sally Peake was the star at the early-season Vault Manchester competition last weekend.
Peake, who is coached by Scott Simpson and was part of the 2010 Commonwealth Games team, set an indoor PB and Welsh record of 4.33m, breaking her own previous national record with a measure only beaten by a 4.35m outdoor vault in the Universiade last year.
Peake went on to move the bar up to the Olympic “B” standard of 4.40m but, despite some promising attempts, had to leave this measure for another day.
To complete a superb day for Wales, Bryony Raine was second with a 4.13m jump, just 2cm shy of her own personal best. The Welsh pair will now travel to Lyon, France, to take part in further competition next weekend

vaulter Lewis named Conference Athlete
Jeff Lewis of Oklahoma Baptist have been named Sooner Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week – the first such honors of 2012.
Lewis, a senior pole vaulter from Cameron Park, Calif., cleared the bar at 16-0.75 to take second at the Texas Tech Open and qualify for nationals.
Blue Ridge’s Johnson named Div. 3’s best player
LAKESIDE, Arizona - Jessica Johnson may not be the tallest player on the volleyball court, but many would say she has the biggest heart.
Count volleyball coaches in Arizona among those who recognize that, as the Blue Ridge High School senior was named the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s volleyball Player of the Year for Division 3. Johnson, a four-year varsity player, was the setter for a Blue Ridge team that made it to the semifinals of the 2011 state tournament. Jessica is continuing to play volleyball and will attend a national tournament with the Rim Club in Dallas in April. At the same time, she also runs track as a decathlete. Last year, Jessica placed second in the pole vault at state and in 2010 set school records in the high jump and javelin throw.
Australian Long Jumper inspired by Hooker
MELBOURNE — The 2008 Olympics were in full swing in Beijing, and Mitchell Watt was on his way to the airport — in Brisbane, that is
While the world’s finest athletes were running and jumping in the Bird’s Nest stadium, Watt was picking up a friend in his home city when someone sent him a text message to inform him that Australia’s Steve Hooker was one of the last men left in the pole-vault competition.
Watt found a radio station and listened to the vault-by-vault commentary of Hooker’s Olympic victory. He listened as a fan, a proud Australian, without any insider jealousy.
“I certainly didn’t have any intention of ever being at the Olympics four years later,” Watt recalled. “I don’t think I even watched any track and field events in Beijing. That was the only one I listened to.”
There will be hundreds of first-time Olympians in London in July. But perhaps none of the rookies will have made as big a leap as Watt, a 24-year-old from Queensland who, after taking a five-year break from athletics, will be one of the favorites for the gold medal in the men’s long jump.
