Hooker healed and happy jumping for enjoyment

The pole vaulter is reaching for new heights, writes Georgina Robinson.

STEVE Hooker doesn’t remember 2011. He’s forgotten the long and difficult recovery from a persistent knee injury and blocked out each deflating botched jump at the world championships in Daegu.

”I don’t even remember that year. I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says, when asked whether he was pleased to see the back of 2011.

When pushed for a serious answer, the pole vaulter maintains: ”Seriously, that’s pretty much the response. I’m just putting it behind me. I’m not going to think about it all, it was a tough year. I’m going to remember my mistakes I made and not do them again, so that’s why I’m taking my time with my approaches, which is what I didn’t get a chance to do in 2011.” Continue reading

Keppler has eye set on the London summer games

WILLIAMSBURG — Janice Keppler is taking her pole vaulting career to a whole new level. Literally.

The 24-year-old from Buffalo spends many mornings soaring through the air at William & Mary’s Kaplan Arena. That’s if she’s not strength-training or practicing speed work on the track.

It’s all part of her plan to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.

“The vault requires strength, speed and a large amount of technical training,” she said. “There is never enough time in a week to feel fully fulfilled in accomplishing everything.”

Though not a Tribe alumni, Keppler trains at William & Mary because of her coach, Dave Fritz. “[His] training plans and theories about the vault made perfect sense to me,” Keppler said of Fritz, who is an assistant coach for Tribe track and field.

Olympic qualifying has been a long time coming for Keppler, who began her pole vaulting career in eighth grade. “I joined the track team to spend time with my friends, but didn’t enjoy the running.”

She was a two-time Mid-American Conference champion during her three years at Eastern Michigan University. She then transferred to Arkansas where she earned honors as a Southeastern Conference runnerup.

It was inspiration from coaches and friends that convinced her to pursue the Olympics. “It’s difficult to continue training,” she said, “but after taking some time off, I was finally convinced to keep training and see how high I could jump.”

What started as just setting a personal best has turned into a bigger dream. “Over the past year, I’ve come to realize I have a much greater potential in the event, and I’m excited to see how far it will take me.”

This weekend she’ll compete in the U.S. Open meet at Madison Square Garden. “It’s my first big competition of the year and my first opportunity to show off all the hard work I have put in this off season.”

Steve Hooker says comeback fell ‘flat’

Pole vaulter Steve Hooker took small steps but reckons his comeback fell “flat”, while Sally Pearson just wanted to puke.

Australia’s track and field headliners had varying reactions to Saturday’s Adelaide Track Classic.

Reigning Olympic champion Hooker logged two clearances, the best only 5.00 metres – but they were his first public clearances since winning the Delhi Commonwealth Games in October 2010.

Hooker also lamented winds which played havoc with his first meet since failing to qualify for the world championship finals last August.

Jumping off just eight small steps instead of his usual 18 paces, Hooker’s comeback from knee injury ended with being timed out of his event as he waited, in hope, for kinder winds.

“It was tough,” Hooker said.

“In the short time we have to take our jumps, if you get a bad two minutes of wind conditions, there is not much you can do.”

Hooker was realistic about the performance.

“I just need to compete,” he said.

“I want to go out there and feel that competition energy but unfortunately I just felt a bit flat.

“I just wasn’t feeling it so much today … standing there with the breeze in your face, it wasn’t quite there.

“But it’s part of the process I’m going through.

“I’m happy with my jumps and happy with some of the steps I took.

“It’s early, for me to be competing in January is a big win for me, so it’s nice to taking those steps.”

Padden highlights strong night for Carroll track

After a modest start to the season two weeks ago in Idaho, the Carroll College track and field team returned to Montana for its second meet and performed well under the Big Sky on Friday at the Montana State Open in Bozeman’s Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Easton Padden provided the biggest highlight with a victory in the pole vault, clearing 16 feet, 0.75 inches. He edged Montana State’s Ryan Kropp, a Capital High graduate, on attempts as the two competitors both achieved the same height. Padden’s clearance (4.90 meters) also is well above the NAIA automatic qualifying mark of 4.75.
