MHS’ Jones places 2nd at National Pole Vault Summit

RENO, Nev. — In a competition featuring more than 230 competitors, Midland High senior Chase Jones stood near the top.

Jones competed in the National Pole Vault Summit on Jan. 21, placing second in the high school division with a vault of 16 feet. Jones is currently ranked third in the state and fifth in the nation.

The Midland High senior is a two-time regional qualifier and won a District 3-5A title in pole vault last season. Jones is hoping to make his first trip to the Class 5A state meet in Austin this coming track season.

The 16-foot vault Jones posted at the Summit is 11 inches better than his personal best for last season at 15 feet, 1 inch

Fordham Prep vaults over competition, wins boys Mayor’s Cup title

By CHRISTOPHER BARCA

It was an all-Fordham Prep final in pole vaulting and only a tremendous personal record was going to give Sean McEvoy a victory.

“Thirteen feet, nine inches is the highest I’ve ever jumped, and my teammate Danny Kaul almost did it, too, he just tapped the bar and knocked it over,” said McEvoy. “But it was great being in the final two with a teammate, knowing that our team was going to win the event.”

Much like winning two events helped propel Clinton to a victory in the girls meet of the NYC Mayor’s Cup earlier in the afternoon, a first and second place finish for Fordham Prep in the pole vault was an integral part behind the Rams’ four-point victory in the boys’ meet at the Armory Saturday. Fordham Prep finished with 27 points while Sheepshead Bay was second with 23, with the 10-point swing from pole vaulting being the difference maker. Continue reading

A Suhr connection

Riga’s Jenn Suhr has won an Olympic silver medal, and has broken the American record in the pole vault three times.

Now she begins a new track season as the number one ranked female pole vaulter in the world.

Suhr has come a long way since her days at Roberts Wesleyan College where she was a basketball star. She didn’t take up pole vault until the spring of 2004 when she was encouraged by Coach Rick Suhr to try the sport, pole vaulting. Four years later, she won the silver medal.

Her amazing climb as the world’s best has taken some dramatic leaps in the last four years as she prepares again to go for Olympic gold. “In the beginning, it was all about pole vault. Reach this jump. That now it’s in its place if that makes sense.”

“It’s amazing. The charm, positive, she has genuineness. Jenn is a better person than she is pole vaulter and she’s the best pole vaulter in the world,” said Rick Suhr.

Winning gold in London may not be a sure thing for Jenn and Rick Suhr, but their obvious connection as husband and wife, elite athlete and coach may be what gives them the edge. Continue reading

Mark Hollis blog about the Reno Summit

Reno Pole Vault Summit, this event is one of the few reasons that I dreamed of becoming a professional pole vaulter. When I first attended the Summit it was in 2007, I was totally in awe of these guys that were jumping over 18ft, I remember thinking there wasnt anything I wanted more than to be one of the elites jumping in front of everyone. 2 years later I was in the elite division and what an honor, every year has just gotten better and better. This year was no different, I was there for 2 days before I jumped and through the meetings my thoughts kept going back to the elite competition. I had good reason to be pumped up for the chance to jump, the week before I had picked up 4 brand new Carbon Skypoles the morning before I jumped. The poles were 5.10m/16’9″ ranging from 205-215lb ratings. That day was the first meet I had ever jumped on only 5.10s I had put a great jump together on my final attempt at 18ft but the pole was too small. At Reno I knew I had 2 more poles in the bag so I was confident that I would have enough poles to jump on, little did i know I would need probably 2 more.

I’m not over the hill: Steve Hooker

AUSSIE pole-vault champion Steve Hooker is confident his best jumps are still ahead of him and insists he isn’t leaving his run to the London Olympics too late.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist has been plagued by an injury to his take-off knee in the past 18 months but continued his return to competition at the Adelaide Track Classic last night.

Despite having a best jump of just 5.6m last year (his personal best is 6m), Hooker said he was far from a spent force and was coming into the prime age of his career.

“For most guys this is when they jump their best,” said Hooker, who turns 30 this year. Continue reading

A man for all disciplines

A ticket to London could be decathlete Steve Cain’s biggest jump yet.

ON WINNING the gold medal in the decathlon at the Stockholm Olympics a century ago, Jim Thorpe was given the rarest of compliments by the King of Sweden.

”You, sir, are the greatest athlete in the world,” he said, to which the American replied, ”Thanks, King.” Whether it was humility or exhaustion that prevented much more, it’s unsure.

”World’s greatest athlete” is the title still reserved for the Olympic decathlon champion but that doesn’t seem to capture it all. Add ”maths star”, ”multitasker”, ”mind guru” and ”shoe lover” and you’re getting closer, although inscribing all of that on one medal is a challenge as worthy of the event itself.
