BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Nikita Kirillovset a school record in the men’s pole vault launching himself over a height of 5.20 meters (17-0.75) to highlight the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams’ time at the Vulcan Invitational.
The height helped him into a second place finish at the meet, as well as the second best mark in the ACC this season, just behind Joe Davis of Virginia Tech.

When he was about 11, Chico Garcia and his friends decided it would be fun to pole vault with a stick over the hedges in his yard. After a failed attempt, Garcia landed in the hospital with a broken wrist. Doctors had to give him enough medication for a 300-pound man, and he still felt the pain. France’s 2010 European Athletics Championships pole vault gold medallist Renaud Lavillenie made an impressive comeback after hand surgery in December when he won the 23rd Samsung Pole Vault Stars meeting with 5.82m in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Saturday night.
