BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —- At the end of the first day at the 2012 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships, the men’s team is in second with 50.5 points and the women are in sixth with 20. It’s just like it always is, you’re never going to have a perfect meet

“We’ll see how it turns out tomorrow. We still have hopes to be in the top three, if not the top two or one. It’s going to be a war tomorrow.”

Michael Seaman won his third-consecutive indoor title in the pole vault with a SoCon meet record height of 17-10.5 (5.45m). Samford put all their competitors in the top eight, with Owen Wagoner in second (16-0.75, 4.90m), Ryan Cook in fourth (15-7, 4.90m), Bo Ackerson-Gilroy in sixth (15-1, 4.60m) and Cory Sears in eighth (14-7.25, 4.45m). width:200 and height: 120 and picwidth: 200 and pciheight: 120BOSTON, Mass. – For the ninth time in 10 years, the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championship trophy left the building in the hands of the Florida State men’s team. The Seminoles used a furious rush midway through Saturday’s schedule at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, erasing a 29.5-point deficit, to claim the 2012 title by a whopping 27.5 points over defending champion Virginia Tech. Bob Braman’s club had rattled off eight consecutive ACC indoor titles before the Hokies snapped their streak in 2011. Graduate student Gonzalo Barriolhet matched a career-best (5.35m/17-6.50) as his jump-off victory in the pole vault gave the ‘Noles their first lead since the opening event of the meet. Moments after Barriolhet celebrated with a giant tomahawk chop as he bounded from the pole vault pit victoriously, the Seminoles’ 200-meter contingent essentially sealed the deal.

Jennifer Suhr wins pole vault again

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Jennifer Suhr overcame an aching left Achilles to win the pole vault Saturday in the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships for the sixth time.

Suhr cleared 15-feet, 3 3/4-inches on her first attempt and only her second height after passing on most of the other levels to relieve the strain on the injury. She tried to break her own American indoor record at 16 3/4 but came up short.

“In hindsight, I probably wouldn’t have,” she said of the try for the record. “But when you’re feeling good and you have the crowd there, you just want to try something. That’s why we just bumped it up right away and took three shots.”

Idaho men capture WAC indoor track title

The Idaho men’s track and field team won the Western Athletic Conference indoor title by finishing first in the final event – the 400-meter relay – at Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday.

Idaho senior Andrew Blaser was chosen the conference’s male field performer of the year after wining the heptathlon on Friday and coming back with victories on Saturday in the high jump (6 feet, 4 1/4 inches) and 60 hurdles (8.03).

“He was willing to do even more if I had asked him to, “ Idaho director of track and field Wayne Phipps said. “to come in today and competing two long, hard days and win the high jump, then come back and get third in the vault, then win the hurdles in a PR time – you just can’t write that script. There’s no way we even have a shot to be close without him on our team.”

Rendel Jones went 47-7 to win the triple jump and Jeremy Klas 17-4 1/2 to win his third consecutive pole vault title.
