Footballer and Vaulter signs with Kansas University

Nick Maestretti, center, signs his letter of intent while his parents, Kelly and Lane, Jeff Evans, Kim Tretton, Jim Abbott, Marty Swisher and Dave Pyle watch on Thursday. It’s been a whirlwind senior season for Douglas High School’s Nick Maestretti.
He was an first-team all-region selection as a kick returner and a second-team honoree as a wide receiver for the Tiger football team in the fall.
During the winter, he helped lead the Tiger basketball team to a state berth while hauling in first-team All-Sierra League honors.
And Thursday, he signed a letter of intent to compete in the pole vault for the Kansas University track & field team.
“I finally made my decision in the last month but I always kind of had a feeling about Kansas,” Maestretti said. “I liked the area and the coach. The school is great. It was just a good fit.”
Maestretti said he was particularly taken with vertical jumps coach Tom Hays.
Hays was named the 2011 National Collegiate Pole Vault Coach of the Year and coached Jordan Scott to a 2010 NCAA title in the event.
“He’s one of the best pole vault coaches in the country, and the program is always a top contender in their conference,” Maestretti said. “I’m excited to get out there.”
Maestretti won the state and regional titles in the pole vault last season, clearing a personal-best 15-6 at the regional championships. Continue reading
