Athlete Profile: Christian Daniels, 12-6 vaulter from Pennsylvania

CHRISTIAN DANIELS.jpgWaynesboro, Pa. —Christian Daniels doesn’t know exactly how he got interested in the pole vault. He just knows approximately when he decided he’d like to try it.

“I don’t even know how I started,” Daniels said. “Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve wanted to pole vault. It’s kind of always been a dream of mine. It’s been great every year.”

He’s definitely glad he did. The Waynesboro Area Senior High School senior is looking forward to big things from his signature event this spring. In fact, he’s setting his sights on Shippensburg University, the site of the PIAA Championships held at the end of May. Along the way, Daniels would like to surpass his own personal record and keep on going for a school record.

Nebraska’s Polacek knows what it will take to win at nationals

There’s something to be said for having been there before. In major-college athletics, experience can be vital. It calms the nerves and gives a sense of familiarity.

And going into this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boise, Idaho, Nebraska pole vaulter Nate Polacek knows what to expect this time around. The Husker senior competed at nationals last year, earning All-America honors after finishing fourth with a personal-best vault of 17 feet, 10½ inches.

“You kind of have a better idea of what to expect,” Polacek said. “This year, having that experience under my belt will only help me in being able to mentally prepare for what’s going on.”

With that experience, Polacek looks to “make some noise” after a disappointing Big Ten Conference meet, when he finished third as the heavy favorite. The winner, Heath
