Applebee looks forward to season
Morris, Illinois –Perhaps there hasn’t been a more anticipate track season for someone at Seneca High School more than that of Alyssa Applebee (12-9) The only senior on the Fighting Irish this spring, Applebee is going to be heading into the season after breaking the IHSA Class 1A state record in the pole vault last season. However, according to new Seneca coach Kim Sedlock, Applebee, who is going to vault for the University of Missouri next year, has set very high goals of her own. “Alyssa has signed with Mizzou for pole vault and I am hoping she can repeat as state champion in the pole vault,” Sedlock said. “Her goals are to go down in four events and to medal in all four events. I have no doubt she can accomplish her goals.”

Missouri star signs on with South East Missouri State
Hannibal, MO —One day away from the start of the season and a threat at state knows what comes after state ends.A signing event was held at Hannibal High School on Tuesday, which is where Christian Locke (best vault 15-0) announced that he signed a letter of intent to continue his athletic career at South East Missouri State University. Locke, a pole vaulter, will face the start of the track and field season at 3:30 p.m. today. The senior said he was happy to know where he was going heading into the season as it would take some pressure off of him.“It is a relief because you don’t have to worry about where you are going anymore, you can just focus on track right now and get better,” Locke said.SEMO, a school in the Ohio Valley Conference, finished fourth out of four athletes in the Men’s pole vault in the 2011 OVC Championships. Drachman Stadium in Tucson, and left the meet with 16 men and 14 women earning Big Sky Championships (BSC) qualifiers. Following the meet, redshirt sophomore hammer thrower Lauren Stuart was named BSC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, alongside fellow redshirt senior hammer-thrower Pascal Tang, who claimed the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.Freshman Lisa Lantz finished fifth as well in the pole-vault at a height of 11’6”.
Russian pole vaulter favored to win indoor world title
BRUSSELS (AP) — With one vault last month, Yelena Isinbayeva gave the indoor season all the spice it needed. This weekend in Istanbul, the Russian pole vaulter will be looking to add the world title to her latest world record and establish herself as one of the most bankable stars of the London Olympics.Besides Isinbayeva, the three-day championships starting Friday also will have in-form hurdlers Sally Pearson and Liu Xiang, and plenty of outdoor champions to prove that a competition without Usain Bolt is still worth following.Isinbayeva saw her string of three indoor gold medals snapped two years ago, highlighting a fall from grace from which she is only emerging from this winter. After showing hesitant signs of recovery, she set a world record of 16 feet, 5 1/4 inches almost out of the blue in her last preparatory meeting in Stockholm two weeks ago. At the 7,450-capacity Atakoy Arena, she will be facing her two closest challengers this year, Jenny Suhr of the United States and Holly Bleasdale of Britain. It will be tough to bet against Isinbayeva now that she’s found her groove again.
