Former Illinois walk-on vaults to record

When Stephanie Richartz was a senior pole vaulter at Carmel High School in Mundelein, she took the advice of her coach Tom Hickey. She followed her dream and came to Illinois as a walk-on. “I qualified for the state meet as a junior and senior, and I finished in the top 20 but not in the top five,” Richartz recalled. “I was being recruited by Division III schools but it was my dream to go to a Big Ten school, particularly Illinois. “My high school coach said: ‘I see a lot of potential in you. Walk on and try it.’” So, Richartz went to Illinois, Now the sophomore, a 20-year-old industrial engineering major, has established herself as one of the Big Ten’s best pole vaulters. In winning the event at last weekend’s SEC/Big Ten Challenge meet at Mississippi State, Richartz set a school and facility record when she soared 13 feet 8 inches. This performance follows a stellar indoor season. Richartz won four times and set the school record with a 13-10 vault at the Tyson Invitational. In the Big Ten championship meet she finished second. As a freshman, Richartz began to realize the potential that her high school coach saw in her. She finished first in three indoor meets. and her best effort outdoors was 13-13/4.
Thanks to these performances, Richartz’s career as a walk-on ended. The young lady, whose personal best in high school was a Carmel record 11-6, was awarded a scholarship. Richartz was a gymnast before she began vaulting during her freshman year in high school. She competed in the sport for three years at Carmel before she decided to focus on the pole vault. “I did gymnastics from the time I could barely walk,” she said. “It was something I loved. I was very, very good on junior varsity but not on varsity.
“I never expected to be a college athlete when I came here. I was here to see what I could do. I love my coaches–they have made me what I am today–and I love my teammates.”
