Palisades’ Greenberg wins pole vault

Pole VaultHot weather doesn’t bother Palisades senior Jamie Greenberg one bit and when the heat was on she rose to the challenge to win the Open Elite Division of the girls pole vault at the Arcadia Invitational with a personal-best height of 12 feet, one inch. Greenberg vaulted to the Los Angeles City Section frosh/soph title as a freshman and will try to win her third consecutive varsity crown at the City Championships in May. She cleared 10′ 6″ to win the City title as a sophomore and cleared 11 feet to repeat last spring. “I was seeded sixth or seventh, so I was a little intimidated coming into this meet, but I actually prefer competing in this kind of [hot] weather,” said Greenberg, who trains with UCLA pole vault coach and former state record-holder Anthony Curran. “It was cold and rainy here last year and I didn’t do well.”Greenberg’s previous best was 11′ 6″ in an all-comers meet at Cal State Northridge in February. That was three inches better than her effort at the state prelims in 2010.Vaulting runs in Greenberg’s family. Her older brother Bryan won back-to-back City titles in 2006-07.

ISINBAEVA SUPPORTS UNICEF

MONACO (MON): Pole vault queen Yelena Isinbaevasupported UNICEF activities in the Russian Federation. She was quoted as saying from her current training base in Monaco where she is in full olympic preparation: “I am so happy to be back to competition and able to break new records. Like many of you I have been very saddened by tragic events affecting our youths recently, and they are very much in my mind when I train and throughout my day. If I perform so well today it is due to a re-newed determination and energy, which come from the love and support from my parents, my friends, my coach and my fans. I realize I was so lucky from the first years of my life to be surrounded by love and care of my parents, family and friends, and I feel that. I believe every child in Russia should deserve the same. This is why, as I get back to the top of my form, I have also decided to support the great work of UNICEF in the Russian Federation, to protect and develop the best resource our great country has- its children and adolescents! Together with UNICEF I’m asking all of us to place every child on the pedestal. To my teenage boys and girls fans, let me tell you one thing: you are all beautiful and you have so much resource in you – don’t let anyone shatter your dreams… and write to me, I would love to hear from you!” Says a release

Mace vaults strongly into season

A few Wisconsin Dells High School varsity track and field team members put up promising results at some early season meets at Portage and Westfield this past week. The team sent a skeleton crew to each event, with many team members taking advantage of the spring break for family vacations.Among the most promising results though came from junior pole vaulter Karissa Mace who is well on her way to satisfying a mission of reaching and surpassing the school record.Kelley Schulz used her 10’9” record and four solid years in the track program to move on to four more seasons with the mighty Texas Tech Red Raiders track and field team.Mace has hit the 10-foot plateau several times, including at the Columbia County Invite where it was good enough to win the event.Mace cleared the bar at 10-feet on her third and final attempt and was unable to go any higher.

Southern’s Vaughan poised for stellar spring

Southern pole vaulter Chelsea Vaughan is poised to have a strong spring season.

Neptune, New Jersey –It was the kind of pressure situation that Southern Regional senior Chelsea Vaughan thrives on.With the NJSIAA indoor pole vault title on the line, Vaughan needed to clear 12-6 to win the gold medal. Three misses by Vaughan, who had cleared 12-6 only once before at an outdoor meet, and Hillsborough sophomore Marlena Sabatino would win the title based on fewer misses at 12-0.All Vaughan did was clear 12-6 on her first attempt. When Sabatino missed on her three tries, Vaughan won her first MOC pole vault title to match

Geneva gymnast Carroll goes upside down for pole vault

TrackPre2-0405-Kane-170.jpgGeneva, IL —Hayley Carroll –Geneva junior

How did you get started pole vaulting?
Ever since I was little, I wanted to do it. In middle school I was in the track program and I went up to the coach and I said, ‘Hey, when does pole vault start?’ They said, ‘Oh, it’s not in middle school,’ and I was like, ‘I have to wait until high school?’ Just seeing the people on television was pretty awesome and that got me into it.

So it was love at first sight?
I’ve done gymnastics for 11 years and I love flying through the air, and pole vault definitely lets you experience that.

Does the upside down and tumbling around of gymnastics help you as a pole vaulter?
It definitely does. Some of the girls newer to pole vault are kind of afraid to get it going, but for me it’s kind of natural to go upside down and fling yourself everywhere. It’s fun.

Which Drills Should You Be Doing?

One rule in vaulting is that any bad habit will become more evident the longer the runway is. Almost all of the good vaulting coaches will have their vaulters practice on short runways. This not only allows them to be able to do lots of repetitions, it can also help minimize the bad habits until they have corrected their technique enough to move back to a full runway.

With that said, vaulting on a short run is not enough. Vaulters need to figure out with which aspect of the vault they are struggling and practice drills that will correct it. For example, if I am a vaulter who has a really hard time bringing my speed over my last step, doing drills such as double rope take offs and sliding box drills would be very beneficial for me. The following
are different technical problems that most vaulters experience:

1. Slowing down at the end of the runway
2. Not getting the plant up all the way
3. Not having enough pressure on the bottom arm when leaving the ground
4. Pulling with their top arm
5. Not collapsing the bottom arm when trying to swing to an invert

Each of these problems can be countered with the following drills:
