Hawk pole vaulter shines in RGVCA Meet of Champions

Harlingen High School South senior Blake White set the tone for students at both schools by earning first place in his pole vaulting event at the 37th annual RGVCA Meet of Champions last weekend at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.
“I’m extremely proud of him. His hard work paid off and set the valley’s best at 15″6′,” said HHSS coach Ralph Dela Rosa. “He’s peaking at the right time for the Texas Relays and district will follow after that. Our goal is to get back to the state meet.”

Mental Skills Training: Approach Mentality

I was watching the masters today. The masters is the biggest golf tournament each year. I was watching Tiger Woods, and it was interesting to watch his body language. And my personal opinion is that his mentality is the reason he is not dominating the game like he was a few years ago. I still think that it is interesting that tiger struggling is still a top 10 world ranking and finishing in the top ten in the biggest tournament in the world. That seems like a pretty great accomplishment to me. But again that is the mentality coming out. He spends a great deal of time jumping from the past to the future. His body language often shows of disgust for hitting the ball 15 feet from the hole instead of 5 feet from the hole. He is often disgusted for missing an eagle putt and settling for a nice easy birdie shot. The challenge with this type of behavior of mentality is that it elevates a persons anxiety. When tiger get frustrated with his shot because it was not where he wanted to be, it is hard for his mind not to wonder onto the thought that this would be so much easier if I was ten feet closer of if I had just hit the ball where I wanted it to go. His mind jumps from the past “hitting a bad shot” to the future “I wish the ball had been in a better spot.” This is an avoidance mentality. In order to be high performing athletes we need to have an approach mentality. We need to embrace the challenges of the next shot with a can do mentality. The same applies to pole vaulting. In the pole vault, often times we our minds jump from ” man I missed that bar” to “what if I no height or miss again.” This can increase our anxiety which directly affects our decision making. No human being can make a good rational decision when their anxiety is high. So it becomes imperative that we focus on staying in the in the present and embrace the next challenge with a can do mentality. This approach will lead to better focus, reduce anxiety and better decision making. Or in tiger case making more putts and winning again. Or in the case for pole vaulters making more bars and jumping consistently high ever time out. An approach mentality is a major element to a successful pole vault career

Vaulting Toward Victory

A short jaunt, quick plant and Peter Chapman was soaring through the air.The 17-year-old Murrieta Valley High School pole vaulter practiced with a swagger on Monday, just two days after shattering school and county records and taking first place at a premiere national competition.”We knew it would come,” Peter said of his performance. The senior athlete said he has been preparing rigorously for months for this season’s competition. He’s just one member of a stand-out team of pole jockeys with their sights set on big regional and state meets coming up in the next few months. MVHS sophomore Amy Angevine traveled with Peter to Arcadia and took home fourth-place honors for her 10 foot 7 inch tournament best.Peter notched a 16 foot 6-and-1/2 inch jump Saturday at the Arcadia Invitational, launching himself into the national leader boards and drawing a bright red line in the sand for competitors across the state.

His recipe for success is simple: practice, practice, practice until the sun goes down.”The first year is the hardest,” he said. “We would be out here for three to four hours a day until the sun went down.” But after training with his father and coach Charles Chapman, a high school and college vaulter, have placed Peter firmly among the state’s elite cadre of student athletes.   Continue reading
