Moon Valley and the Westside Invite

I takes great courage to vault in high cross winds, cold and occasional rain.  Moon Valley’s five vaulters came through showing how tough we are when it comes down to it.  No PRs were set.  it was survival not vaulting.  The total team scores were Moon Valley men 15th and women 16th.  Senior Alyssa Guy vaulted onlly 7-6 but it was good enough for a fourth place among the 28 vaulters.  Freshman Lillie Ledesma managed a 7th place with 7-0.  Both handled the weather and finished well above what was expected.  They boys went earlier and the weather was worse.  Tyler Latier faced a drizzle of rain when he went down the runway.  One time at the plant he slip from 13 feet to 6 feet.  26 male vaulters vied for the title.  Dylan Austin’s record remained safe with Bo Haddock clearing only 14-0.  Moon Valley’s phantom vaulter Tyler Cone came in third on misses at 13-6 behind Copper Canyon’s Adrian Childress.  Tyler trains with Todd Lehman at PVCC and shows up in a Moon Valley uniform for meets.  Tyler survived a nasty fall in the box and a plant very under in wind and cold to get the medal.  Next Tyler siteing should be in two weeks at a meet on April 29th.  Will Hooper, our top vaulter, sat on the sidelines with a sprained ankle coaching Brad Linder and Tyler Latier.  Brad managed 13, disappointing to him, but amazing considering the circumstances.  Brad came in 5th.  With good weather the next couple of weeks, Brad can move up his pole, add a 6th step and go much higher.  His rock back form is amazing.  Tyler Latier was the best vaulter in the second wave of vaulters.  This was one of his first times in the big time and he came through winning his heat with an 11-0 vault, good enough for 15th overall.  Tyler has lots of quick room for improvement with a longer run and moving up his pole.  Overall, The Moon Valley vaulters handled the elements and were the class act at the meet, showing that they fight through the elements and do the best that can be done under the circumstances.

Lucky Friday the 13th for Foreman

4-14 Foreman 1.jpgWestlake, La. —Friday 13th usually doesn’t conjure up happy thoughts or excitement but for Sulphur’s Derek Foreman it brought out the best in him at the Rotary/Westlake Ram Relays.
Foreman set a new school record and cemented himself as one of the top pole vaulters in the state after clearing 15’7” to win the event.
He missed on his first try at 14’ but got it right the second time and cleared 14’6” with little trouble and then cleared 15’2” to break the old school record that he set just a few weeks back. Foreman then switched to a new carbon fiber pole and propelled himself over 15’7” with room to spare on his first attempt giving himself one of the best birthday presents possible on his 18th birthday.
Foreman had spent the last two weeks resting up from a few nagging injuries.
“I just cleared my mind for once and though about what I needed to do and just jumped,” Foreman said. “It was a good birthday present.
“It feels great. It leaves a lot of worries behind. I have been out for two weeks resting. I had to break that rest last Friday to help the team out. I just got some new poles and it kind of helped out.”

‘Pole-Vault Nerd’ on Track for Run at Title

Florida –Lakeland senior Josh McDaniel is a self-professed pole vault “nerd.”
Ever since he picked up the sport as a sophomore, he’s deluged himself in the history of it, the specifics of the best gear and the training to get him to where he wants to be: a contender for a state title.
He’s getting there, and mostly with the help of a supportive family who fosters the expensive niche.
“My dad doesn’t want me to know how much he spends,” said McDaniel, who tied for second place in the state last year in Class 3A.
“But I know it’s a lot.”
“Well, I wouldn’t tell you, either,” his dad, Ben McDaniel, chuckled during a phone interview. “But it’s an expensive sport to be involved in because the coaching side of it can be expensive. The poles can be expensive, too. It can get nuts.”
The poles can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000 apiece.
Here’s the nuttiest part: Ben drives Josh to Melbourne twice a week so that his son can get the best training possible. That’s a 117-mile trip (one way) that takes about two hours, the pole bungee-strapped to the side of Ben’s SUV because there’s no room for it in the car.
In Melbourne, Josh trains at Pole Vault City with Bobby Haeck, a former state record holder in the event who has coached 37 state champions and nine All-Americans. Haeck set the Florida Class 3A state record in 1987 when he jumped 15 feet, 5 inches, Continue reading

Cities bidding for 2020 Olympics launch international campaigns

April 14 – The world got its first look at the early plans of the five cities bidding for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics when they each made 10 minute presentations at the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) General Assembly here today. Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo all used their first appearances on the international stage before an audience of 1,200, including 50 International Olympic Committee (IOC) members, to try to make an early impression.
While a relatively short time to try to their messages across, the standard of the presentations was impressively high, another sign that this contest is set to be offer more drama over the next 18 months than perhaps was first anticipated.
The presentations were the only opportunity the cities have to present their plans publicly before the IOC’s ruling Executive Committee meets in Quebec on May 23 to draw up its shortlist.
Increasingly, it looks like all five bidders will be given Candidate City status especially after Baku, perceived to be the weakest of the bidders, impressed with the quality of their presentation

Katerina Stefanidi leads Stanford

While their interest on this sunny Saturday afternoon was in garnering points for Stanford in the annual Big Meet against Cal, two Cardinal athletes might have a chance of competing on track and field’s biggest stage this summer in the London Olympic Games.Amaechi Morton won two individual events for Stanford and ran on both winning relay teams to help the Cardinal defeat Cal 106-57 at Edwards Stadium in the 118th Big Meet.On the women’s side, Katerina Stefanidi contributed five points to a Cardinal onslaught when she won the pole vault at 13 feet, 11 1/4 inches, helping Stanford post its largest margin of victory over the Bears in the 33-year history of the women’s meet, 122-41.

Dove soars to county
pole vault record

Princeton, Illinois –With a name like Dove, you’re bound to take flight.Princeton High School senior James Dove flew off to the school and Bureau County record in the pole vault Thursday at Bryant Field. He cleared 14 feet, 7 inches to break the 31-year-old record of 14-6 3/4 set by Rick Lappin in 1981.“The first thing I felt was disbelief because I thought it was going to fall,” said Dove, who tried to up the bar to 14-9 but came up short.Dove has already scored a victory just making it back to the track this spring. He was a 2010 state qualifier as a sophomore but missed most of the 2011 season with a stress fracture to his ankle that required surgery. He said wrestling this winter helped his rehab, even though it was running in wrestling practice on the hard floor a year ago that led to the stress fracture. Wrestling helped, even though I was worried I was going to hurt it,” he said. “I got to opt out of sprints and just wrestle. That helped strengthen it, I guess. After wrestling season was over, it was kind of sore. I was gradually able to sprint. I have to keep moving, or it gets sore.”PHS track and field coach Dan Foes said he made it back with a lot of hard work and determination.“I’m very proud of James. He has worked hard for four years and endured some adversities along the way. But he has remained focused and is really coming into his own,” Foes said.Dove’s personal best was 14 feet which he cleared to win last week’s Mendota Invite. State qualifying for 2A which PHS will compete in this year is 13-3.But for now, the number 14-7 sounds pretty good, he said
