Gold rush for Clay
American hoping to become first decathlete with three medals.Olympic champion Bryan Clay is hoping to successfully defend his decathlon crown in London this summer by claiming successive gold medals. The 32-year-old American won Olympic gold in Beijing four years ago having secured the silver medal in 2004 during the prestigious games in Athens.A bronze medal would give Clay the complete set, however, the Texas-born athlete is aiming for top spot and eclipsing the two gold medals Daley Thompson CBE won for Great Britain.Thompson won back-to-back golds at Moscow and Los Angeles, but could only manage fourth in Seoul in 1988, meaning no decathlete has secured three medals – a feat Clay now wants to accomplish.
Gold
“I’ll take a bronze, but I don’t want the bronze. I’d love to win another gold medal, I think that’d be great,” he told Sky Sports News HD. “Of course that would make me the only decathlete to win three medals.”I think Daley Thompson was the closest to winning three Continue reading

Monaco – The IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, which will take place from 10 to 15 July 2012 are on course to become the biggest gathering in terms of participating national IAAF Member Federations in the history of these championships. With the deadline for the Preliminary Entries now closed, we are proud to announce that no fewer than 186 IAAF National Member Federation have signalled their interest in participating in these Championships; the most attended edition was Beijing 2006 where 176 countries gathered in the Chinese capital, followed by Annecy 1998 with 170 countries. With a total of 1856 athletes entered, the record of participating men and women is also on course to be broken as the previously most attended Championships in terms of athletes was Bydgoszcz 2008 with 1413. In a year where the IAAF is celebrating its Centenary, the World Junior Championships are shaping up to offer another incredible week of athletics following the opening World Athletics Series event of the year, the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul which also set a record number of participating nations with 172.
UNI track and field has strong showing at the Jim Duncan Invitational and Cornell Open
University of Northern Iowa–The University of Northern Iowa track and field team split up to compete in two different events over the weekend. The Panther throwers headed to the Cornell Open in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where they put together an excellent performance. The rest of the team went to the Jim Duncan Invitational, hosted by Drake University in Des Moines. UNI took first place in both men’s and women’s pole vault. Senior Daniel Gooris continued his outstanding year with a vault of 16 feet, 6.75 inches to win the event. Jenna Wexter also took first place in the women’s pole vault with a leap of 12 feet, 5.5 inches.
Burnett, Poock lead first place finishes in McCush Invitational
Boonville, MO. — Although no team scores were kept during the annual Jack McCush Invitational Friday at the BHS Sports Complex, that didn’t stop senior Melanie Poock or sophomore Savannah Burnett from capturing first in their respective events. In her first meet back since her injury at the start of the season, Poock picked up where she left off last year after qualifying for state in the pole vault with a vault of 7’-8”. Burnett, meanwhile, fell shy of her personal best for the season in the high jump but was still good enough to take the gold with a jump of 4’-6”.
Air Force pole vaulter Cale Simmons becomes unlikely star
Air Force had little reason to believe the skinny high school kid from California – with an emphasis on skinny – would have a shot to make the Olympics in the pole vault someday.Cale Simmons admits he isn’t as stout as the typical pole vaulter. He is about 6 feet tall and weighs “a buck-42,” as Falcons pole vault coach Scott Steffan says.“It’s true,” Simmons says with a laugh.“I joke with him that he’s the only vaulter in the country who the pole is bigger than he is,” Steffan said.Simmons may lack bulk, but he has become one of the best pole vaulters in the country for Air Force. At the Texas Relays during the last week of March, Simmons’ vault of 18 feet and a half-inch was a milestone. That tied an academy record. It was the third-best vault in Mountain West history. No Falcon had cleared 18 feet since 2004. Going into this weekend’s events, it was the best mark in the conference and the third best in the nation.“It was probably the coolest 2 seconds of my life,” Simmons said.At Rocklin (Calif.) High School he was vaulting about 16 feet, and Air Force’s coaches certainly didn’t figure he’d be passing the rarified 18-foot mark for the Falcons. And he’s just a junior – the Continue reading

Emma King sets Maryland state record in pole vault at Don Boyer Invitational
Emma King won the pole vault at the Don Boyer Invitational on Saturday with 12 feet 10inches, the highest clearance by a high school girl in Maryland state history. The Oakdale junior All-Met entered the competition at 10-6, a foot higher than what the runner-up finished with, and blew through five more heights before finally bowing out at 13 feet. Eleven feet, 12, 12-6, 12-8 and finally the state-record clearance posed no problems for King. She set a new personal best by seven inches and solidified herself as Maryland’s greatest female prep vaulter on a sunny day at Middletown High.“That’s just huge,” King said.King also placed second in the 400 meters in 58.83 and contributed a leg on Oakdale’s 4×100 relay. In the pole vault, she shredded the record previously owned by Urbana’s Lauren Graf, who set it at 12-7.25 at Penn Relays in 2002.King will take the same trip to Penn Relays in Philadelphia later this month and she will try to prove herself against against a competitive, international field. She is confident she can win. The 16-year-old has been on a tear in the last two months, setting the Continue reading
Freshman decathlete Joe Hutchinson to carry Olympic torch in May
As a University of North Carolina decathlete, Joe Hutchinson is accustomed to sprinting, shot putting, throwing the discus and pole vaulting. But this summer, one of the most meaningful athletic experiences of his life will be an easy, 300-meter jog.Hutchinson, a freshman decathlete on UNC’s track and field team and an international student from Melksham, England, will fly home to run the Olympic torch before the games begin in London.Hutchinson, who will carry the torch on May 23 near his hometown, said he is looking forward to representing his country.“A lot of sporting heroes that I loved growing up carried the torch, and now I have the opportunity to carry it,” he said.Cameron Overstreet, a pole vaulter on the track and field team, said Hutchinson is a hard worker.“He is top-ranked in Britain and did a lot of national competitions over there,” Overstreet said.Hutchinson said the torch will be carried by 300 different runners a day for 60 days before the games, and he has the opportunity to purchase the torch he carries as a memento from the occasion.“This is a great honor for Joe and his family,” said Dennis Craddock, head track and field coach, in an email. The director of sports from Continue reading
