His own ‘Field of Dreams’

Wyoming man’s backyard pole vaulting pit keeps him connected to the sport–When some people reach middle-age, they buy a convertible. When Mike Soule turned 53 in 2005, he installed a pole vaulting pit in his Wyoming backyard. And not just any pole vaulting pit, but one with an 85-foot rubber runway overlaying two tons of limestone base, complete with 4,500 watts of permanent outdoor lighting“It’s my own ‘Field of Dreams’,” says Soule. “Shoot, I’m 60 years old. I’ve got to have some fun somehow, right?”

Inspired to Return–A native of Luck, WI, Soule grew up pole vaulting. He started practicing using peach crates and a conduit pole at the age of 7, and went on to qualify for the 1969 state meet in the event while at Hudson (WI) High School. Though he topped out at 12-7 1/2, he chose to pursue football instead as a walk-on at the University of Arkansas.Over the years, Soule regretted getting away from the sport, and inspiration struck one day in 2004. After watching American pole vaulters claim the gold and silver in the Olympics that year, he came to a conclusion: “That might be fun again.”The father of three put in the physical training necessary for his return to the sport, but was still in for a rude awakening. Standout pole vaulter aims high

Utah State University –The first time Sonia Grabowska’s middle school coach handed her a pole, she fell in love, but in Warsaw, Poland, where she grew up, she would have referred to her newfound obsession as “skok o tyczce,” meaning pole vault.Track and field spectators can pick Grabowska out at a meet by finding the athlete with a half-sleeve tattoo on her left arm and a bright-blonde, asymmetrical haircut.“She has a fiery personality,” USU track and field coach Gregg Gensel said. “She is very outgoing, very vocal.”Aside from being one of the top-ranked pole vaulters in the Western Athletic Conference, Grabowska is an older sister who loves to Skype her friends from home and listen to music as often as she can, Grabowska said. One day, she will be “heavily tattooed,” she added. Her journey to USU began when she heard friends talking about going to school in the U.S. She said this encouraged her to call a man who was helping Polish athletes and students get connected to American universities.Grabowska received offers to join the track and field teams at Virginia Commonwealth, Adams State, Texas State and Colorado Mesa University, as well as a slew of other small East Coast colleges. In the end, she said, it was a toss-up between Utah State and Texas State.“I looked at the pictures online, and they were just pretty, so I wanted to come here,” Grabowska said. However, she could do without the cold weather, she said — it annoys her.So, she took a full-ride scholarship to represent USU in pole vaulting. Ever since, she has won titles and awards for indoor and outdoor events, ranking regionally and nationally.A few of the bullets on her list of accomplishments include setting the indoor and outdoor school pole vaulting records and tieing the WAC record. Shawn Barber’s aspirations rival his vaulting heights

Texas pole-vaulter Shawn Barber, a senior at Kingwood Park, didn’t become the nation’s best by accident. The progression to his personal best of 17 feet, 8 inches, set at the beginning of March, was a steady process that first began six years ago on the family’s farm in New Mexico. In a Quonset Building, a steel-arched, hangar-like facility that provided shelter for the livestock and a playground for an 11-year-old kid.
Housed inside the “big barn” was gymnastic equipment, an Olympic-size trampoline and, most importantly, all the necessary components to pole vault.

My dad had a passion for it,” said Barber, about his coach and father, Dale Barber Continue reading

Sass returning to form after injury

Delaware –It’s taken some time, but senior Aaron Sass of the Worthington Kilbourne High School boys track and field team is getting back to where he once was in the pole vault before suffering a broken arm.In the Panther Invitational on April 6 at Hilliard Darby, Sass won the event by clearing 11 feet, 6 inches. Four days later in a dual meet against Hilliard Davidson, he cleared 11-0.“I was playing backyard football and broke my left radius, so I had surgery in November (2010) and another one last July,” he said. “It was tough because I had physical therapy at 4:30 (p.m.) every Wednesday (last season) and that was the only time I could take it, so I was missing at least one practice every week for that. Plus, you need arm strength to pole vault. It was a slow process to build that back up.”“Aaron is having a good year after coming off an injury before his junior year, and it kind of messed up his arm,” coach Todd Deisher said. “He won (April 10) going 11-0 on a cold night. He was running the 110 (-meter hurdles) and the 300 hurdles and still going back and forth to the pole vault.”Cold weather is not conducive to pole vaulting, according to Sass.“It’s tough to compete in the cold if your legs get too cold and it’s also tough to feel the pole,” he said. “I try to stay warm between jumps. That’s about all you can do.“Pole vaulting is all about having fun and doing everything perfectly at the right moment. You have to run and plant and have you have to do everything right or it all falls apart.”Entering a tri-meet against Upper Arlington and Central Crossing on April 17, Sass’ top height in the pole vault this season came in the Panther Invitational.   more
