Merritt Breaks State Record

By Rich Gonzalez Editor, ESPNHS/DyeStatCal (April 19, 2011) — Santa Margarita High’s Kaitlyn Merritt’s quest to capture her first Orange County Championships title this weekend now looks more realistic than ever. One question: Will she break her third state record to aid her in that journey?Merritt soared to a lifetime-best clearance of 13 feet even at Servite High on Thursday to win the girls pole vault competition in a Trinity League meet against Rosary, breaking her own state freshman class record in the process. Merritt had previously cleared a class record 12-10.25 this season. On a greater scale, Merritt’s mark moves her to fourth on the all-time Orange County list, with Newport Harbor alum Allison Stokke’s 13-07.00 from 2007 topping the chart. Merritt also rose to 16th on the all-time Continue reading

Mill Valley’s Brigham won’t stop raising the bar

Mill Valley junior Emily Brigham won the girls pole vault event at the Kansas Relays on Friday, April 20 with a 12-3.5 vault. Before clinching victory, Brigham nearly broke the meet record with a 12-7.5 vault.

Shawnee, Kansas –When it was over, when Mill Valley junior Emily Brigham clinched the pole vault event at the Kansas Relays on Friday, she walked away choking back tears of frustration. She had just put on a show with a back-and-forth duel with Gardner-Edgerton’s Cassie Wait, each clearing 12-3.5 and each stirring “oohs” and “ahhs” from those seated before them. But she didn’t get the Kansas Relays record. And it’s not easy to please the only girl in Kansas to ever vault 13 feet these days.“We had a great day,” her pole-vault coach, Ryan Hays, told her as she sat on the turf afterward. But she was so close. It’d be a few minutes before she’d shake the sting.  Continue reading
