Albright sets meet record in pole vault, clearing 15-1

Kansas –It wasn’t exactly ideal conditions for pole vaulting during Thursday’s Louisburg Invitational.The breezy, cool weather added a few more obstacles for the vaulters, but that didn’t stop Louisburg’s Jacob Albright from making history.Albright set a Louisburg Invitational record after he cleared 15 feet, 1 inch to win the pole vault and set a season-best.Albright’s record-setting win was one of several highlights during Thursday’s meet as the Wildcats won the team title with 155 points. Louisburg edged out Blue Valley Southwest by one point.“Jacob vaulted great,” Louisburg coach Gary Griffin said. “I am very happy with the way he is competing. I was very excited with how we competed at our home meet. A lot of our kids had personal records, and we won a lot of medals.

Bastien Bests Own Saline High School Records

Saline, Michigan– senior Steve Bastien broke his own school records in the long jump and pole vault Tuesday when the Hornets hosted Monroe.Bastien leaped 24 feet and 1/4 inch to break his own record of 23 feet, nine inches. Prior to this season, Eric Williams 22 foot, 8 1/2 inch jump in 2006 was the school record.Bastien also cleared 15 feet in the pole vault, breaking his record 14 feet, six inches.

Ballew Leads South Dakota Track and Field

YANKTON, S.D. – Led by a strong performance by junior Kyle Ballew in the pole vault, the South Dakota track and field teams recorded several personal-bests during competition at the Mount Marty Twilight Meet, which was held Tuesday at Williams Field in Yankton, S.D.
Ballew (West Hills, Calif.) won the men’s pole vault with an effort of 17-5 – which is a personal-best and a mark that is ranked tied for 21st in the nation and 14th in the West Region.   more

Record-breaker comes on the third attempt

Austin, Minnesota –Austin’s Abby Snater took a step past last year Tuesday when she broke her own record in the pole vault on the way to claiming first in the event.It took Snater three tries, but on the last try she cleared 11 feet, four inches, breaking her own school record of 11-03.“It was pretty remarkable,” coach Nancy Jones said. “Her first attempt was the worst of the three, the second attempt was really close and the third attempt was really nice.”In terms of progress, Snater’s vault Tuesday put her ahead of where she was last year.“It’s exciting because last year it took until sections before hitting 11-03,” Jones said. “We’re only in April when she did it.” Pole vault: 1, Abby Snater, 11-04.00; 4, Rachel Quandt, 8-06.00; 6, Sela Fadness, 7-06.00  more

Buell Named Summit League Athlete of the Week

ELMHURST, Ill. — South Dakota sophomore Bethany Buell has been named the Summit League Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. It is the second honor of the outdoor season for Buell. Buell (St. Louis, Mo.) earns honors after setting a school record in the pole vault at the Long Beach State Invitational Saturday in Norwalk, Calif. Buell cleared a height of 14-3 ½ — beating the school record by one inch – to win the event. The height is third-best in the nation this season and also a personal-best. Buell is ranked No. 1 in the Summit League in the pole vault and second in the West Region.The sophomore has earned conference athlete of the week honors seven times in her Coyote career.Buell is among a contingent of Coyote athletes that will compete at the Drake Relays, which start Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.  more

Edwardsville's depth pays off with Madison County championshipGRANITE CITY, Missouri• There’s more bad news for opponents of the Edwardsville boys track and field team — not only do the Tigers continue to get better, they’re getting healthier.Edwardsville won four of the six field events, including Tom Schuette in the pole vault (14 feet, 6 inches), Josh White in the high jump (6-7) and triple jump (44-2 1/2) and Vincent Valentine in the shot put (55-5).Schuette, a senior, set a personal record in the pole vault before going out at 14-9.”I’m thrilled with what I did today,” said Schuette, who was a state qualifier last year. “I’ve been at 14 for so long and to finally get past that plateau is great.”I just need more practice and I think I can get a lot better. I’m hoping to hit 15 by the sectional and I’ll have practice time between sectional and state, so I’m hoping to put up some big numbers.”  more

Indiana Tech inks pole vaulter

Indiana Tech track and field is proud to announce the signing of Ayrton Fineout of Okemos High School in Okemos, Michigan.Ayrton is an accomplished pole vaulter owning a career best 14-0 in the event.”We see a lot of potential still in Ayrton,” Indiana Tech coach Doug Edgar said in a release. “He gained almost two feet between his junior and senior year and should still improve during the outdoor season. Pairing him with a full time vault coach and the boys currently on the roster, I think he can come in and make an immediate impact at the conference level for our program. Ayrton understands the work ethic needed in the classroom and should be a great addition to our vault group.”  more

Diamara Planell Cruz joined theSan Jose City College track team this season and has already reached the newCaliforniaStateCommunity Collegerecord in the women’s pole vault with 12 feet 7 1/2 inches in the Collegiate Section atStanfordUniversityon April 6.“Setting it this early is impressive,” track and field head coach David Flynn said. “Her work is unbelievable, and she is an amazing athlete.”Her assistant coach Brandon Vance said she needed to compete with Div. I athletes and that was why Stanford was a good meet.Before pole vaulting, Cruz was in gymnastics for seven years. She said her school in Bayamón,Puerto Rico, did not have pole vaulting available for women.“You had to seek a coach, and it’s like you want to break a barrier,” Cruz said. “It wasn’t available for women; but one girl went against the federation, and it opened a door.”After moving from Puerto Rico, Cruz attendedLos AltosHigh Schoolfor her junior year, where she began pole vaulting for the track and field team. Oxford Native Broke The School Pole Vault Record Last Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After breaking the school pole vault record over the weekend, Ole Miss’ Sam Kendricks was named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Track & Field Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.Kendricks, who hails from Oxford, Miss., broke the 27-year-old school record on his way to victory at the LSU Alumni Gold meet. He cleared a height of 17-11, which broke Baker Vinci’s school record of 17-10 set in 1985 (seven years before Kendricks was born). It was his sixth victory in the last seven meets at which he has competed.Kendricks now ranks seventh in the NCAA, second nationally among freshmen, first in the NCAA East Region and 19th in the world in the pole vault this year. In his first year of college, the Rebel rookie has now set the school record for indoor and outdoor pole vault.It is the second freshman of the week honor for Kendricks this season. Morales honored by WHAC

Indiana Tech’s Igor Morales was selected as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week following a record setting weekend at the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational.Morales, a junior from Venezuela, began by capturing first place in the pole vault with a winning height of 15-9 which hit the “A” standard. His mark beat the previous Tech record in the event by 7.5 inches. He then placed sixth in the javelin throw with a distance of 131-10, also a new Tech record.  more

Russian athletics stars choose Bath University to train for Olympic glory

Bath, UK–Some of Russia’s top track and field athletes will train at the University of Bath ahead of the Olympic Games.The country’s athletics team will arrive on campus on July 20, before leaving for the Olympic Village in London on August 1.As well as making use of the sports facilities, the 30 athletes and support staff will stay in accommodation at the Claverton Down campus.The Russians finished second behind the United States in terms of medal haul at both the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and last year’s World Athletics Championships in South Korea.University director of sport Stephen Baddeley said: “The Russian Federation is one of the powerhouses of world athletics and we are pleased and proud to announce that the Russian athletics team will be training with us at Team Bath.”China is also basing 25 of its top swimmers at the university, while members of the Malaysian Olympic team will also train there, along with representatives of other nationsMr Baddeley added: .“The Sports Training Village will have a truly international flavour this summer, with athletes from Malaysia, China, Ghana, Egypt and Barbados as well as the UK, and a wide range of other countries, training at Team Bath.Gold medal winners included Yelena Isinbayeva, who set who set world and Olympic records in the women’s pole vault, Gulnara Galkina-Samitova in the women’s 3000m steeplechase and Olga Kaniskina in the women’s 20km walk  more

Parkersburg, WV –Serving as the pole vault coach for the Mohigans was former-Parkersburg High School standout Jeff Core. The proud father of two boys-Jackson (10) and Preston (8)-Core continues to excel as the event he loves.Most recently the physcial education teacher at both Morgantown and University High Schools traveled to the Masters Nationals at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. where he won with a vault of 15-feet, 1-inch.Core, who set a state record in the event in 1989, began his love with pole vault during his eighth grade year at Hamilton Junior High School. The girls’ team finished third of six teams.”The biggest surprise was Brandt Delage in the pole vault, vaulting 11-foot,” Coach Folkers continued. “I’ve been trying to think back on my ten years of coaching and I can’t think of anyone I’ve had get over 10 feet. Brandt is only a freshman and he’s vaulting over 11 feet. Miguel Hernandez vaulted for the first time a week ago and today he vaults eight feet. That’s huge for us as we look down the line for true team. more

Olympic Stadium honour for Georgia Pickles

 UK–CREWE & Nantwich AC youngster has been selected to compete for the North West at the Olympic Stadium in London next month.Pole vaulter Georgia Pickles, 15, from Sandbach, has been picked to take part at the Sainsbury’s 2012 School Games finals.Her club-mates Josh Platt, a sprinter, and Fraser Ashman, a throwing ace, have also been called up.The event, a multi-sport event for elite school athletes, will feature 1,600 competitors and be watched by 35,000 spectators between May 6-9.Georgia, a pupil at Sandbach High School, said: “To have the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Stadium is amazing. I can’t wait to get to London and mix with the other athletes and find out about their different sports and see them in action.“The Games will give me a chance to socialise with other athletes my age who will understand about all of the training commitments.“Hopefully they will be my team-mates in the future.”Reigning Cheshire Muliti-Events champion Georgia earned a top 10 pole vault finish in the national indoor championships earlier this year.Other sports on show include badminton, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, judo, rugby sevens, swimming, table tennis, volleyball and wheelchair basketball. There will also be demonstration events in disability judo, gymnastics display and sitting volleyball.Jeremy Hunt, secretary of state for culture, Olympics, media and sport, said: “Georgia has worked incredibly hard to win her place and I wish her the very best of luck.“I can’t wait to see the finalists compete in our iconic Olympic venues just weeks before the world’s top athletes do the same.” more
