Pole Vaulters Lead the Way for Track and Field at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Harvard track and field team’s pole vaulters highlighted a busy weekend of action as the squad sent competitors to the Larry Ellis Invitational, the MIT Spring Invitational and the Mt. SAC relays. The bulk of the team took to the track at the Larry Ellis Invitational. Olivia Abbate turned in a strong performance in the 100 hurdles, running a time of 14.48, good for ninth in the race. Gabrielle Scott’s time of 54.61 in the 400 saw her capture third in the race. Emily Reese raced well in the 3,000, taking second with a time of 9:56.54 as one of only three competitors to break the 10-minute mark in the race. Mary Hirst posted an outdoor personal best in the high jump, clearing 5′ 9.25″ (1.76m), good for third in the competition and fourth in team history.  more

For Vegas, 16 feet would be sweet

Winston-Salem –AUSTIN VEGAS 16239015.JPGAustin Vegas isn’t a high roller, but he certainly is a high flyer.”It’s amazing to watch him go up, and I’m like, ‘Whoa, hang on on the way down,’ ” James Studevent, East Forsyth’s track-and-field coach, said of watching Vegas in the pole vault. “It’s a daredevil type sport. There’s a little extra anxiety when you watch it.”Vegas, who has signed with William & Mary, has won the past two NCHSAA 4-A indoor championships and was a potential winner of the 2011 outdoor title if not for what he called “the worst performance of pretty much the whole season.”Today, he’ll be aiming for the clouds when he vaults at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, with his event scheduled to start at 10 a.m. He’s hoping the high level of competition will bring out a performance he has been poised to have for nearly a year.Vegas has a personal best of 15 feet, 7 inches this spring — a height that leads the state. But he essentially has been stuck near that height since last spring.”It’s extremely frustrating to be honest,” Vegas said Tuesday. “I cleared 15 my sophomore year, and since then I haven’t gotten much of anywhere. I have been doing a lot better the last two weeks. I have had a shot at 16 feet the last five weeks, and sooner or later it’s going to click, and I am going to be happy.”I have gotten stronger and faster, and honestly, I have been watching YouTube videos trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. My coaching has been great, but I think I figured out two things to help me out.”Competing in the discus, high jump and long jump haven’t taken too much time away from his vaulting practice, but instead, have helped increase his speed and strength, Vegas said.He is concentrating on his inversion — the part of the vault when he’s on the way up — and getting his feet and hips over his head. He has watched countless videos of some of the world’s best Continue reading

Diminutive Denby reaches new heights

Any high school pole vaulter who clears 14 feet on a consistent basis definitely is getting up there. Given Jack Denby’s physical stature, that 14-foot range seems higher somehow.Denby is a Carlinville High School sophomore who stands 5-5½ and weighs about 110 pounds — “maybe 115 if he’s had a big meal,” according to Carlinville boys track and field coach Ken Garrison. But a combination of speed, strength and dedication to the sport has helped Denby climb into the top tier of area vaulters this spring. He cleared 14-7 in a home meet on April 17.After clinching first place by clearing 14-0 at last Saturday’s Rochester Invitational, Denby narrowly missed on his final attempt at 14-8.Denby cleared 14-0 to tie for second with Rushville-Industry senior Dalton Plumer, a recent Illinois State University signee, in the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic last month. Defending Class 1A state champion Mitch Mammoser cleared 15-1 to win it.“I was hoping to be at 15-0 by now,” Denby said at Rochester. “I’m still working toward that. Hopefully I can get on top of that pole and get to 15-0 soon.”Denby, whose next major meet comes today in the Jokisch-Grandone Invitational in Carlinville, credits much of his progress to working with the Flying Dragons Pole Vault Club in Normal. He and his sister, eighth-grader Katie Denby, have been involved in the club for several years.“It’s great, because it pushes you,” Jack said. “Everyone there is elite. They’ve produced a lot of state champs. It’s great to be a part of.”   more

Saginaw Boswell vaulter states her goal: Win state

ABILENE — Saginaw Boswell junior Lakan Taylor won the Class 4A Region I pole vault Friday at Abilene Christian University’s Elmer Gray Stadium, and made her intentions known about winning state in two weeks.
In setting a personal best by clearing 13 feet on her third and final attempt, Taylor also beat defending 4A state champion Annie Rhodes of Waco Midway, who was second Friday at 12-6.
View photos”It was so much adrenaline on that last run,” said Taylor, who also beat Rhodes at the Texas Relays last month — 12-9.25 to 12-5.5. “I was getting kind of worn out, but I knew I didn’t want that second place. I wanted first.”
She missed three attempts at 13-3, but Boswell coach Curtis Lamle said Taylor has topped 13-3 in practice.
“She just gets better and better every day,” Lamle said. “She works so hard. I’m so proud I can’t see

Aztec’s Ritter twins love the pole vault

AZTEC, NM — James and Mark Ritter are often the first ones to Aztec track practice, the last one’s to leave and between their workouts they coach the middle school athletes. The senior twin brothers have no place they’d rather be.”I’m addicted to it,” James said. “A lot of people dread track practice but for me it’s the best part of my day.”James and Mark are pole vaulters for the Tiger track team and are the main reason Aztec is one of the deepest schools in the state in the event this year.James posted the highest jump in the state this year at 14-feet six-inches and Mark edged out his brother to earn the bronze medal in the event at last year’s state championship meet.”When you’re in the air and everybody’s looking up at you,” James said, “it’s just like, Wow.’”The Ritters got hooked on the pole vault years before they started competing.Their older sister was on the track team and as elementary school students the brothers spent Saturdays watching the high school students pole vault.”I thought they were jumping 20-feet in the air,” James said. When they were old enough to join the middle school track team, the Ritters headed straight for the poles. For the first few years, the vaults weren’t memorable. Continue reading

Speed Training

Q1 – SpeedEndurance.com: A lot of confusion and mystery lies with the true volumes of jump training that is sufficient for stimulating neuromuscular adaptions and teaching. While small doses are often looked at as the goal, teaching takes repetition. Could you expand on how important the sequence of the training year and the quality of foot strike? Can you explain why it seems that some programs thrive off of higher volumes while some just lead to injury?

BOO: As far as foot strike, the ability to properly dissipate impact forces through full-footed landings is obviously a huge help to staying injury free while jump training. I think there are two other, more subtle keys to successful progression and remaining injury free in jump training. The first lies in variety, specifically advancing training cycles in a timely fashion. The other is taking a purposeful approach to the process.

Just as athletes do, we as coaches tend to settle into comfort zones. You get your athletes doing particular forms of jump training. Then, as mastery is approached, it’s time to move on to something else, but our natural tendency is to breathe easy and admire our work for a while. Periodic shifts in exercise choice, volume and intensity are critical, even though they might make life for the coach tougher. Successful higher volume programs do this and show a bit of a pioneer spirit. Continue reading

Coaching counts in Drake Relays

Coaching left its imprint on Friday’s session of the Drake Relays.  Michael Viken completed an Eastern Illinois sweep of the men’s and women’s pole vault, with a winning leap of 17-8½.
Viken credited assistant coach Kyle Ellis with helping both he and women’s champion Jade Riebold reach new heights.
“He trusts in his vaulters and we trust in him,” Viken said. “If we feel like conditions are good and we want to go up a pole, he’ll support us on that.”
Ellis offered Viken the chance to switch poles if the conditions were suitable Friday. The result was a vault that matched Viken’s career best.
“You’ve just got to wait for a good wind,” Viken said, “and go with it.”  more
