Boys Prep of the Week: Brian Ullrich, St. John Neumann track and field
Naples, FL–St. John Neumann’s Brian Ullrich doesn’t fit the mold for most pole vaulters as an eccentric thrill-seeker willing to launch their bodies skyward with little regard for the trip back to earth.”It takes someone a little out there to do this, but I wouldn’t say I fit the specific stereotype for pole vaulter. I just go out and jump,” Ullrich said.”Brian is the most even-keeled pole vaulter I’ve met. He is very methodical. He’s the antithesis of the out-of-left-field personality,” Celtics coach Mike Olayos said. That calm, cool and collected persona prevailed even as he was in a three-way battle for the 1A state pole vaulting title in Jacksonville on Friday.”I was a little nervous because I knew the other two could make it over at 14 (feet),” Ullrich said. “When they missed the next attempt I just knew I had it.”After all three vaulters missed on their 14 1/2-foot attempts, Ullrich claimed the championship because it took him fewer attempts to clear the 14-foot mark. Cancer survivor Roseland throws with right-hander at Coors Field.
DENVER — It was a special day, if not a lucky one, for Woody Roseland.A bone cancer known as osteosarcoma — an aggressive malignancy that usually occurs during a time of rapid growth — led to doctors replacing his left knee during his junior year of high school. From there, he has needed several surgeries to remove tumors from his lungs. After a long period of nagging pain in his left calf, doctors decided to remove his left leg from above the knee on June 14, 2011. After the amputation, he underwent 12 rounds of chemotherapy. Finally, on the morning of April 10, the staff at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver told him he was clear of cancer.Roseland has spent his entire life looking to smile and help others do the same, regardless of the circumstances. He admits having teachers from elementary school on admonish him for cracking jokes at the wrong times. But he was 16, playing wide receiver on the football team at Smoky Hill High School in Aurora, Colo., and pole vaulting in track when cancer was discovered and he had to have his left knee replaced. , Roseland, 21, understands good news and good luck often have an expiration date.”There have been a lot of times in my life when they were like, ‘You’re done with chemotherapy,’” Roseland said. “And I was, ‘All right, sweet.’ I felt healthy. I felt ready to take on the world. Then three months later it’s — I get scans again, and it’s in my lungs. It’s kind of been a recurring theme to hear that I’m cancer-free and then for it to come back.” Continue reading
Influence of pole plant time on the performance of a special jump and plant exercise in the pole vault
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the timing of the pole plant during the stance phase of the jump on the energy level of the vaulter/pole system at take-off for a special pole vault take-off exercise (Jagodin). We hypothesised that an earlier pole plant would increase the pole energy at take-off compared to the energy decrease of the vaulter during the jump and plant complex and so lead to a higher total energy of the vaulter/pole system at take-off. Six male pole vaulters experienced three Jagodins each with different pole plant time building three groups of vaults (early, intermediate, late pole plant). Kinematic data of vaulter and pole were recorded, as were ground reaction forces measured at the end of the pole under the planting box and under the take-off foot. These measurements allowed the energy exchange between the vaulter and pole to be determined. We found neither statistical significant differences in the mechanical energy level of the vaulter/pole system during take-off between the three groups nor a relationship between the timing of the pole plant and the energy level of the vaulter–pole system during take-off. We conclude that although the timing of the pole plant influences the interactions between the vaulter, the pole, and the ground, it does not affect the athlete’s performance. Although a late pole plant decreases the loss of energy by the vaulter during the take-off, this is counterbalanced by a decrease in the energy stored in the pole at take-off. more
