Burley sets school record, clears 14-6 to win pole vault

SALINA, Kansas — Chris Burley soared to unprecedented heights for Great Bend High School on Friday afternoon at the Salina Central Invitational.
Burley cleared a personal best while setting the school record in winning the pole vault at 14 feet, six inches. His previous best was 14-0.
“He knew exactly what the school record was,” said Great Bend head track and field coach Bo Black of Burley, a junior. “He can say that he’s the very best, the greatest pole vaulter in the history of Great Bend High School.
“That’s quite an accomplishment and it couldn’t have been bestowed upon a better kid. He’s been trying to get to 14-6 the last three weeks. I’d say he’s got the opportunity to go up over 15 feet. Fifteen feet is definitely within reach.”  more

Vandebilt vaulters shine at state meet

BATON ROUGE — Over the years, Vandebilt Catholic’s pole vaulters have dominated the awards podium at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association outdoor state track and field meet.Although they didn’t win an individual state championship at Saturday’s state meet at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium, the Terriers still had two vaulters place in the Top 3 of the Class 4A event.Vandebilt senior Nicholas Laurent finished as state runner-up in the boys’ pole vault with a second-place jump of 15-feet, losing only to champion Jacques Dugas of St. Thomas More (15-06).Vandebilt sophomore Patrick Watson placed third overall with a leap of 14-feet.Laurent entered the state meet as the defending Class 4A state champion.”I was hoping for another first, but I’m fine with second,” said Laurent, who will become a pole vaulter at Louisiana-Lafayette next year. “It is disappointing, but I beat my personal record. I’m fine with it.”Watson, who finished tied for fourth at last year’s state meet, said he was satisfied with a third-place finish. He topped his personal best at the meet.”I didn’t jump as high as I wanted,” Watson said. “My shoulder was really bothering me, but I’m happy to finish in third. I’m perfectly fine with finishing behind Nick. I know he works a lot and really wanted it. I’m fine with finishing right behind him.”Vandebilt Catholic senior Katie Watson finished second overall in the Class 4A girls pole vault with a jump of 10-feet. Assumption’s Bailey Daigle won the pole vault at 10-06, and Lakeshore’s Taylor Thompson was second.Watson, who placed second overall in the pole vault last year, said she was disappointed she couldn’t place first in the final high school track and field meet of her career. But after fighting through a knee injury all season, she said she was happy to make the podium at the state meet.”It was really rough finishing third,” Watson said. “I really wanted first, but I did what I could do. This was my last year, but so I wanted to win it. Finishing third was pretty rough, but considering everything, I think I did alright.”

Riverside, California–Murrieta Valley’s Peter Chapman won the boys pole vault with what was, for him, a relatively easy height of 15 feet 6 inches. He just missed at 16 feet, but he made his attempts count in entertainment value, eliciting claps like a real pro from all those gathered around the runway rooting him on.”I was like, ‘I’m gonna get the crowd into it, give me some energy and it was close,’” Chapman said. “I like that part of it a lot, it makes the competition a little funner. Because then its kind of like a show rather than just a competition. more
