The Oregon Twilight meet comes annually late in the regular season. The Ducks and athletes from other surrounding colleges are sharpening for the post-season. The pros want to perform well, but not too well, because the big paydays aren’t here yet. There was none of that on Saturday at Hayward Field, which is starting to look very much like an Olympic Trials venue again. The temporary grandstands are up at the south end of the stadium. The place has been brushed with fresh paint and there is a growing feeling that the big circus is about to come to town. And it is, in about six more weeks. The intrigue Saturday surrounded a newcomer to the track named De’Anthony Thomas and the return of pole vaulter Tommy Skipper. At 27, Skipper is an old man by comparison, with more than a decade’s worth of Hayward Field moments. After a three-year lay-off Skipper re-emerged for what appears to be an attempt to qualify for the Trials. He did not clear a bar on Saturday, missing once at 17-8.50, running through on his second attempt, and then missing one go at 18-0.50.Skipper is a legend. The greatest high school vaulter of all-time, his U.S. record is almost nine years old. And he’s the most successful collegiate vaulter of all-time, with five NCAA championships. If he can overcome recent injury problems and and make a push for the Olympic team it would be one of the best stories of the Trials. more
