France’s Lavillenie eyes pole vault gold

Renaud Lavillenie looks increasingly likely to ensure Steve Hooker doesn’t claim another gold in the Olympic Games pole vault.Renaud Lavillenie has emerged as France’s main Olympic gold medal hope – and the man most likely to ensure Australia’s Steve Hooker doesn’t claim back-to-back Games wins – after a masterful pole vaulting display ahead of the London event. In cold, blustery conditions, the 24-year-old from Clermont won a high-level competition with a best of 5.90 metres, a new record for the Golden Spike meet and a world-leading mark.”It was a great start to the season,” Lavillenie said of his winning vault.”I’m not unbeatable, but it’s a good response to (Bjorn) Otto (who had set the previous world lead of 5.83m on Wednesday).”Lavillenie, who won the world indoor title in Istanbul in March ahead of Otto, added: “I’ve never vaulted so high for my outdoor season opener.”I remained in control and demonstrated that I learnt some lessons from Daegu (where he won bronze).”My goal coming into this competition was to set a new meet record, which I did when I went over at 5.78m. What came after was the cherry on the cake.”At the start of an Olympic season, I nailed a 5.90m to send out a message to my rivals.”His run to form could not have come at a better time.Defending Olympic champion Hooker is still to recover his true form after an injury-plagued couple of seasons. And Lavillenie’s main competition now seems likely to come from German duo Otto and Malte Mohr, Poland’s Pawel Wojciechowski and Cuban Lazaro Borges the latter two the surprise podium toppers at last year’s Daegu world championships  more

MA: Teska wins all-class pole vault title

FITCHBURG — Perennial power Wachusett Regional ran away with the girls’ District E All-Class Meet hosted by Fitchburg State University at Elliot Field Saturday, but Nashoba Regional was able to lock up the lone local first-place individual performance. Nashoba senior Casey Teska made it a goal to break the meet record in the pole vault. Slowed by injury, however, she settled for winning the event, clearing 10 feet.”Casey Teska has been injured and hadn’t vaulted in over a month and half,” Nashoba head coach Dan Glover said. “She just stepped in, did one jump, hit 10 feet and then won. She was ranked fourth in the nation this winter for pole vaulting. She only jumped once because her back was bothering her and she is going to focus on next week’s state meet. She already jumped 13 feet this year, and she wanted to go for the All-Class record which was 11-6.”

Washington: Lofty goals

Eastern Washington –Nicole Talcott, who placed first in pole vault at 10-03 and took third in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.65 seconds, is the state’s No. 2 ranked pole vaulter in 1A. Her 10-3 mark also set a district record.
“Vault wise that is what we expected of her,” Henry said. “She was doing really well in practice and was clearing 10 (feet) all week, so 10-3 is a great mark going in.”

He said the top-ranked vaulter is in the 13-foot range.

“I really hope to break my school record at state,” Talcott said. “It’s 10-9, so I would love to do 11 but I at least want to break that.”

“That’s my biggest goal. I just really want to do well and I’m excited to be there.”

Talcott no heighted at district last year because she got nervous. Although her nerves got the best of her then, she has already proved that is behind her.

“I think I’m just a lot more confident in it now,” she said. “Coach and I have been working on it the whole year and I’ve been really focused. I picked it up half way through the season last year so I was still kind of new to it.” Continue reading

Prader Wins Pole Vault

IRVINE, Calif. — Junior John Prader won the pole vault as the Cal Poly men’s track and field team finished four while the women’s team finished eighth at the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Irvine, Calif. Prader won the pole vault with a personal-best of 17-feet, 6.50 inches on his final attempt at the height. Longhorn pole vaulter Masterson moves past her setbacks

Natasha Masterson won a Big 12 outdoor title in pole vault.Make one thing clear. Natasha Masterson is going places. The NCAA track and field championships just won’t be one of them.Masterson, the Longhorn junior pole vaulter from Hendrickson, is as determined and upbeat as they come, traits that come in handy, considering all the adversity she has overcome in her three seasons at Texas. During that time, she’s had to fight through everything from surgery to remove a benign brain tumor to torn knee cartilage to a ruptured quad. She can add one more hurdle to her track career now. The pony-tailed brunette with lime-green fingernails and an insatiable zest for competition failed to qualify for the NCAA meet in Des Moines, Iowa, by an agonizing single spot on a steamy Friday afternoon.Despite clearing the bar by well more than a foot each time, Masterson dislodged the standard on her way down, resulting in fouls on her two attempts in a three-way vault-off against Oklahoma’s Alexandra Acker and Illinois’ Stephanie Richartz. High vaultage

Building confidence: Pole vaulter Steve Hooker's plans to compete in China were thwarted by the weather, but he has more practice runs before the London Olympics.

CHINA rained on Steve Hooker’s parade. The moment he wanted to reconfirm in his own mind he was ready to compete again, his plans were Shanghai’d. Last week, Hooker went to China to compete for the first time since his humiliating world championships in South Korea where he couldn’t get off the ground and afterwards admitted the mental demons that assault all pole vaulters had overwhelmed him.   Continue reading

Washington: Dunford wins 2A title in pole vault

TACOMA – Mount Baker pole vaulter Nathan Dunford is a true testament to what a little hard work can do.Last year Dunford’s personal best was 13 feet, and he didn’t earn a place at state. But he trained all winter long with Dick Henry – a local coach from the Bellingham area – and Dunford’s preparation paid off in a big way, as he cleared a mark of 15-00.00 to claim a 2A state title during the 2A-3A-4A Washington State Track and Field Championships Friday, May 25, at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.Dunford, who entered the state meet with the top mark in 2A, beamed with confidence after learning he was a state champion, rather than showing a tremendous amount of emotion.”It feels good,” said Dunford calmly. “I just love to pole vault. I love it. I practiced all winter with Dick Henry in Bellingham.”

On hand to witness the title win was one of Mount Baker’s pole vaulting coaches and the most successful Mount Baker pole vaulter up to this year – Kas Tommila – who set the Mountaineers’ vault school record of 15-00.00 in 2001.   Continue reading

Illinois: Cirron Clark vaults into finals

Clark 26.jpgCHARLESTON — Danville pole vaulter Cirron Clark couldn’t have asked for a better Friday afternoon.
First off, the hot and humid conditions at O’Brien Field were perfect.
But, they were not quite as perfect as Clark was in his three jumps.
The senior, who cleared 14 feet, 9 inches, will enter today’s IHSA Class 3A State Track and Field Meet as the No. 1 seeded pole vaulter.
“It was nice and hot,’’ said Clark with a wide smile as sweat ran down his forehead. “I love jumping in hot weather. I always do my best when it’s like this.’’
And how did he do in his three jumps?
“It was pretty solid,’’ Clark said. “I didn’t have any misses or need any extra jumps to clear my three heights. I just got myself to the finals.’’
It was the exact type of performance that Danville High coach Steve Luke said he needed from his senior on Friday.   Continue reading

North Dakota: Century pole vaults into lead

Century’s pole vaulters knew they had to score and score big if they were going to do their bit at the state girls track meet. They came through big at the Community Bowl and, on the way, lifted Century into first place in Friday’s first-day standings. With six of 19 events in the books, Century boasted 53 points, 28 of them courtesy of the crew of vaulters.“Unbelievable,” was CHS coach Nick Walker’s response to the performance of the vaulters. “One, two, three and five. That was an excellent job by those girls.”Sophomore Lauren Gietzen soared to a personal best 11-0 to take first place ahead of senior teammates Sierra Kreft and Ann Govig, who shared second place at 10-9. Junior Haley Moch vaulted 10-0 for fifth place.Century will have a 10.5-point lead over runner-up Bismarck when action resumes at 11 a.m. today. The final event, the 1,600 relay, is scheduled for 4 p.m.Gietzen’s first-place effort on Friday was just her second meet victory of the season, and it was something of a shock. Missouri: Wright excels in event she was hesitant to embrace

Big_Six_Track_BS_Megan_Wright_AV.jpg

Blue Springs, MO —Megan Wright wasn’t sure what sport she wanted to concentrate on when she was a freshman at Blue Springs High School. “I knew I was going to be on the swimming team,” Wright said, “but I also wanted to be on the track team. I remember going to practice and watching the pole vaulters and I thought, ‘That could be fun.’” It could also be quite rewarding as she ended a highly successful three-year all-state run on the Wildcats swimming team this year to concentrate on the pole vault. The senior standout broke her own school record with a 12-foot, 4-inch, vault at last week’s Class 4 sectional meet and is one of the favorites Saturday afternoon to challenge Lee’s Summit West’s state-record holder Brittany Kallenberger for a gold medal in the Missouri State Track and Field Championships at Jefferson City.“I’ll never forget my first meet,” Wright said before leaving for Excelsior Springs to work with her personal vaulting coach, Todd Cooper, who reached the Olympic trials before turning to coaching.   Continue reading
