Reese Watson demonstrates his state championship pole-vaulting skillsHOUSTON – May 25, 2012 – Reese Watson, Spring High School senior, won the UIL 5A Pole Vault at the State Track and Field Meet May 12 at Mike Meyers Stadium, University of Texas, Austin. This was the second consecutive year for Watson to win the UIL State Pole Vault 5A Championship. Watson is a three-time state qualifier who took third at state when he was a sophomore. His impressive statistics include a second-place win in the Nike Track Nationals in 2010 while representing Spring High School. In addition, he represented Team USA at the Youth Olympics in Singapore in 2010. Reese was recently named High School Athlete of the Week by Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine and KPRC Local 2 Sports more

Rancho Bernardo High pole vaulters punch ticket to state

Rancho Bernardo High senior pole vaulters Ryan Zacchilli and Oliver Delgado made it look easy Saturday, as both glided over the state-qualifying 15-foot, 3-inch mark on their first tries at the CIF San Diego Section track and field finals at Mt. Carmel High. Zacchilli would eventually go on to be the only vaulter to clear 15-9 to claim the section title and Delgado would finish in second place with the personal-best 15-3 mark, as the one-two punch for Rancho Bernardo will have one more competition together before moving on to college.“I am excited to go to state with Ryan; and having your teammate out there makes you a lot more comfortable,” said Delgado, who will be making his first trip to the state meet which starts Friday in Clovis. “A lot of the time it helps just to watch Ryan’s vaults. I can take pieces from his vault and fix Continue reading

Texas State vaulter advances to NCAA championships

AUSTIN — Junior vaulter Logan Cunningham qualified for his third straight national championship Saturday afternoon at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin. Cunningham finished with a height of 5.40 meters (17-08.50) to finish fourth in a field of 48 competitors.Cunningham cleared the bar on his second attempt at the 5.40-meter mark to join just three former Bobcats (Charles Austin, Becky Collins and Brian Veal) who have made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Championships. On the day, he was four for five on attempts.“I can’t say enough about the kid,” said head coach Dana Boone. “He has been great and very consistent for us all year. We’re very proud of him and hope he does well at the national championships.” more

Rockets’ Oxley wins D-III regional pole vault title despite injury

RUSHVILLE, Illinois — Berne Union’s Jesse Oxley wasn’t going to let a little thing like a stress fracture stop him from winning the pole vault title during the Division III regional meet Wednesday at Fairfield Union.”My leg starting hurting on the outside of my fibula about four weeks ago,” he said after clearing 14-feet-0 to earn the right to compete June 1 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State for the state title. “When I first went to the doctor, they said it was just tendonitis. But then I went in for an MRI and they said it was a stress fracture. So I’ve been trying to stay off it as much as possible and just jump when I have to.”He had to jump Wednesday, however, without doing much running since his injury. Continue reading

Montana: Schroeck tops Class B pole vault

Jefferson High senior Emily Schroeck won the girls pole vault late Friday night at the B state track and field meet in Bozeman, and Panther freshman MacKenzie Mundaniohl and Townsend junior Chiara Warner registered runner-up finishes on Saturday. The pole vault moved indoors because of poor weather, but it didn’t seem to faze Schroeck, who cleared a personal best of 10 feet, 6 inches and edged Huntley Project’s Bailey Crawford (10-6) because of fewer misses in the competition.  more

Oregon: State champ propels Pirates

EUGENE — Marshfield’s Dalton Milburn repeated as state champion in the discus at the Class 5A state track meet Friday, helping push the Pirates into first place in the team race after the opening day of the meet. The Pirates also continued their strong tradition in the pole vault. They scored 27 first-day points to take an eight-point lead over Summit in the team race heading into the finale today at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. Marshfield’s only other opportunity for boys points Friday came in the pole vault, a traditional strength for the school. Chase Messerle and Paul Harlow added to the legacy. Messerle finished second, twice besting his previous personal record and ultimately clearing 14 feet, 6 inches.“I’m pretty satisfied with my performance,” said Messerle, a senior who was competing at state for the first time. “I feel like I still had an extra half-foot or foot.”But he said he was pleased to continue Marshfield’s tradition in the event.“I don’t feel much pressure,” he said of the Pirates’ many state Continue reading
