Kevin Schipper’s 5.32-meter (17 feet, 5.5 inches) vault at the NCAA East regional prelims in Jacksonville on Saturday extended his college career for another 10 days. The Irish senior may be staring down his last leaps after graduating last week, but the Schipper family doesn’t look like it’s leaving South Bend anytime soon. With his performance this weekend, Schipper was one of six members of the men’s track and field team to secure a spot in the NCAA Championship meet scheduled to begin June 6 in Des Moines, Iowa. It will be his second trip to the last meet of the year and one more line to add to his impressive jumping résumé. Schipper won six consecutive Big East titles in the pole vault (three indoor and three outdoor) during the last three years. He might have had a clean career sweep if not for his older brother, Matt, who won both events as a senior when Kevin was a freshman. The Schipper siblings, all nine of them, started their athletic careers as gymnasts Continue reading
Illinois –The North Central College men’s track and field team took a large leap forward in the team standings at the end of the final day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships on Saturday, scoring 30 points in the final two events and winding up fifth in the 84-team field.
The Cardinals saved their best performance for last, sweeping the top three spots in the pole vault, which was the final event to be contested. After Peter Geraghty, John Wood and Josh Winder cleared 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches, they found themselves to be the only ones remaining in the competition and proceeded to push their limits after the team points had been secured. Wood and Geraghty each cleared 17’6 1/2″ on the second attempt, tying the Division III Championship meet record, then elected to raise the bar to 17’8 1/2″. Geraghty sailed over the bar on his first attempt, securing a new personal best and his second straight outdoor national title. It marks the sixth time a Cardinal has won a national championship in the vault and the 115th individual national title in North Central’s history. Continue reading

Indiana –Allen County products enjoyed great success this past weekend at the NCAA Division I Track and Field East Regionals in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 12 places in all events and relays advance to the NCAA Championships to be held June 6-9 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Long known for outstanding pole vaulters, the Fort Wayne area enhanced its reputation as Hunter Hall of Virginia Tech and Kevin Schipper of Notre Dame tied for title. Both cleared 17-feet-5.5 inches with the same number of misses. Hall is a Homestead graduate, Schipper a Bishop Dwenger graduate. Also competing in the event was Owen Wagoner of Samford (Carroll H.S.). Wagoner tied for 13th after clearing 17-3.5. Wagoner failed to advance based on misses. more
ELLENSBURG, Wash. – A Central Washington University pole vaulter blames Delta Airlines for losing a crucial piece of her equipment and preventing her from competing for a national title.
Athlete Kati Davis believes the airline’s mistake robbed her of winning what would’ve been her third All-American title on Friday.
“And so I was at my national meet with no coach and no poles and I had one borrowed pole that was too small,” she says.
The incident began Tuesday when she checked in at Sea-Tac Airport with her pole vaults – paying $200 to Delta Airlines for the oversize baggage fee.
But once she got to the site of the competition, at Colorado Springs, there were no poles.
Davis says she spent the next four days making several painful calls to Delta – hoping the poles would arrive for Friday’s competition. Continue reading
