Retiring at 92 years old: An officiator’s final vault

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The best of Michigan’s high school track and field athletes competed at the MHSAA State Championships Saturday.

Anyone familiar with pole vaulting knows 92-year-old Jack Baas.
He’s held a clipboard in his hands for 54 years. But now, he’s finally retiring. Saturday was his final event at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids.

At first glance, you probably wouldn’t guess Baas is 92-years-old.

“He has the world’s greatest personality. He’s always upbeat, sharp as a tack,” says state track official Lew Clingman. Continue reading

Eighth Grade Record holder has high hopes for high school

Zane.jpgRipley, W.Va. — When it comes to the art of pole vaulting, there must be something in the water on Statts Mills Road near Ripley. Consider the fact that the two record holders in the pole vault at Ripley High School both grew up on Statts Mills Road. Justin Southall owns the boys’ record in the event while Savana Whiting left last spring as the school’s all-time best female pole vaulter. Southall, a graduate in the Ripley High Class of 2000, was a two-time Class AAA state pole vault champion before going on to enjoy a solid career in track and field at the University of Akron. Whiting, who scored in the event at the State Meet during her high school career, just completed year one as a pole vaulter at the NCAA Division I level for the University of Charlotte. Don’t look now, but another Statts Mills Road resident is making a name for himself in pole vaulting. Zane Griffith set the Ripley Middle School record this past season by clearing 10 feet, seven inches. Continue reading

Grand Valley coaches win awards

Allendale, Michigan —Another national championship season is reaping in multiple awards for the Grand Valley State University women’s track & field team. The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has selected GVSU head coach as its NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, Lou Andreadis as its Division II national assistant of the year and runner Betsy Graney its Women’s Track Athlete of the Year. Andreadis is receiving his award for the first time thanks to the performance of his pole vault student-athletes at outdoor nationals.Sophomore Kristen Hixson of Remus and senior Jocelyn Kuksa of Palatine, Ill., finished 1-2 in the pole vault at the outdoor championships, with Hixson clearing an NCAA Division II outdoor meet record of 13 feet, 7 1/4 inches. Earlier in the season, Hixson cleared 13-7.75 — the second-best vault in Division II history.  more

Pole vaulting duo rose to the challenge

TOP OF THE CLASS—Moorpark High student-athletes Frances Barnes, left, and Michael Montgomery set school records this spring in the girls’ and boys’ pole vault events. RICHARD GILLARD/Acorn Newspapers California –Michael Montgomery and Frances Barnes set the bar high. They set it so high, literally and figuratively, that they etched their names in the record book. The Moorpark High seniors for the track and field team broke school records in the pole vault this spring. Montgomery owns the boys’ record with a vault of 15 feet, 3 inches. Barnes, who picked up the sport as a sophomore, established the girls’ mark at 11 feet.“Unbelievable,” said Scott Mangers, the Moorpark girls’ head coach. “We had two of the best pole vaulters in the state on our team. We expected them to win every league meet. They’re so solid.” The dynamic duo followed the formula for success “They’re both great athletes,” Mangers said. “They’re both hard workers. That’s how you get school records.” For Montgomery, the pole vault record is a way to leave a legacy. Bound for Long Beach State, Montgomery spoke glowingly of his hometown. “I’ve lived in Moorpark my whole life,” he said on Tuesday afternoon, just days before Thursday’s graduation ceremony at the track stadium.   “I learned morals and values here. This community has given me so much.” If Montgomery sounds grateful, it’s because he’s learned about the fragility of life.  Continue reading

ISU pole vaulter Mike Arnold on cusp of reaching Olympic trials

After redshirting at Idaho State this spring in hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Mike Arnold has moved one step closer to his goal. The Bengal pole vaulter cleared a height of 18 feet, two inches Friday at Davis Field and according to ISU head coach Dave Nielsen, it is most likely enough.“That should earn him a spot in the Olympic trials, Nielsen said. Levi Keller, a former Bengal track athlete, jumped a centimeter under Arnold’s height. Paul Ritchfield also most likely qualified for the Olympic trials with his height. “The fact that we had three athletes accomplish this is pretty amazing,” Nielsen said. The Olympic trials will be held in Eugene, Ore. at the end of June.

Proffitt to vault for ‘Dogs

Sage Proffitt is making the leap from North Buncombe High to the University of Georgia. After winning seven individual state titles and leading the Black Hawks to a state team championship, Proffitt will complete in the pole vault for the Bulldogs.

North Buncombe track star commits to Georgia

ASHEVILLE — After winning seven individual state titles in her career and leading North Buncombe High team to a state championship last month, Sage Proffitt was looking for new heights to clear. She found them at the University of Georgia, where she plans to compete in the pole vault next season.Proffitt, 17, visited the Bulldogs’ campus earlier this week and committed to the school almost immediately.“I really enjoyed the visit and liked the campus,” said Proffitt, who set a Western North Carolina prep pole vault record by clearing 12 feet, 6 inchesin April. Spindler, Hoffman All-Ohio

COLUMBUS – Derek Spindler was hoping to exceed 14 feet and set a personal record in the pole vault at state on a cold, rainy, windy Friday. The Fort Frye senior came up short of that goal but still placed and earned Division III All-Ohio honors in the event for the second straight year at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the OHSAA State Track and Field Championship on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus.”I didn’t get as high as I wanted to, but I can’t complain,” Spindler said. “It was nice to get back on the podium.”The weather wasn’t the best. The wind kept changing direction. I was a little nervous, but I was more prepared this time.” Spindler vaulted 13 feet, 6 inches to finish in a tie for eighth place with Cory Larick of Carey. Only the top eight at state medal and stand on the podium to be honored.  Continue reading

Alexander vaults to second in bad weather

Gibsonburg's Jacob Kissell vaults in the Division III district track meet on Thursday at Eastwood High School.COLUMBUS  Two years after ending one place and six inches away from the podium, Nathan Alexander came within four inches of the top spot. The senior became just the third Old Fort boy to ever place at state in the pole vault Friday, clearing 14-8 to capture second on a blustery, cold day more reminiscent of the start of the season than its finale. But while the final height wasn’t the personal best he’d hoped for (he cleared 15-6 earlier this year), the runner-up finish was more than enough.”That’s what I was hoping for the whole time. Since I was a sophomore, I came here, top eight got on the podium, I got [in a tie for] ninth,” said Alexander, who’s taking his vaulting skills to the University of Cincinnati. “The main thing I wanted to do today was get top eight, anything else was just an added bonus, so I’m happy.”It didn’t come easily. In one of the coldest, windiest state meets in Ohio history, Alexander and the other vaulters combated a stiff cross wind all afternoon long, which came after a morning-long rain and a day-long cold spell.Though the rain dried up and the cold was a bit challenging, the wind proved to be the biggest nemesis the cross wind treated the pole like a sail during each approach, forcing vaulters into a battle to steady their poles and solidly plant them, while the tail wind pushed vaulters past their normal takeoff spot.  Continue reading

Adjustments vault Pust to state track and field finals

cif track and field championships 2012 CLOVIS, California – Adjustments must be made at the CIF State Track and Field Championships.
Glossing through on talent won’t get it done on the State Meet’s first day, where a finals berth must be earned. Adjustments are a must — for the broiling heat, the nerves jangling your insides and, of course, the predictable pressure.
Golden Valley pole vaulter Steven Pust adjusted. That’s why he’ll compete for a state title tonight.Pust, the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters champion, maxed out a tailwind and cleared 15 feet, 6 inches on his first try. Only one vaulter reached higher.  Continue reading

Wisconsin: Area boys vaulters triumph in D2, D3

LA CROSSE — Separated by divisions, Jake Wiedemeier and Preston Perkins each came into the WIAA state track and field meet on Friday with the same goal — winning a state pole-vaulting championship. In the end, both got what they wanted. Wiedemeier, a Crivitz junior, repeated as the Division 3 champion behind a 14-foot, 3-inch vault, and Perkins, a Marinette senior, took home the D2 title with a 14-foot performance.Wiedemeier brought the Marinette & Oconto Conference its third consecutive D3 boys pole-vaulting title behind a vault 9 inches better than his championship effort a year ago. After he wrapped up the state title, Wiedemeier made an attempt at 14-9½, which would’ve broken the Crivitz school record held by his pole-vaulting coach, Scott Banaszak.”I’m just very happy and thankful to my coaches, parents and friends that they are always there with me and rooting me on.” Wiedemier said. “It gets me excited looking towards next year already, but I know the target on my back is even bigger now.”After taking eighth place as a junior, Perkins won the D2 title after missing the beginning of the season while recovering from knee surgery. When he returned, Perkins turned out a personal-best vault of 15 feet at the Oconto regional two weeks ago.”It hasn’t set completely in yet, but it’s a great feeling,” Perkins said. “I did not jump at all indoors this year, and I didn’t participate in an event until three weeks before regionals, but with the rehab I went through, I came out of it even stronger.”  more

Sky’s the limit at Vault in the Ville pole-vaulting event

Louisiville, KY –Chip Heuser put on a party at 4th Street Live, then almost stole the show. The former St. Xavier High School pole vaulter was the organizer of the inaugural Vault in the Ville and finished second, behind 2011 USA indoor champion Mark Hollis, before about 500 fans.“Pleased as punch,” Heuser said. “It was so awesome. I am really proud. It’s a dream come true for me. I am glad everybody showed up. We had a massive turnout. It was just amazing.” Hollis, who also claimed the 2010 USA outdoor championship, was the only competitor to clear 17 feet, 9 inches on a cold, blustery evening. He then missed all three attempts at 18-5“Of course I wanted to be able to jump higher,” said Hollis, who collected the $1,000 first-place check. “But I am happy with what I did.”Hollis, who already has qualified for the Olympic Trials, said he was “pumped” to come to Louisville. He said he had dinner at 4th Street Live in 2005, when he was competing in the NAIA Championships for Olivet Nazarene University.“As soon as Chip told me they were going to do it here, I was really excited,” Hollis said. “Because from what I remembered, this was a pretty cool place and it’s a perfect place for this kind of thing. He really did it right.” Continue reading
