Chapman is top boys athlete

You might have seen it coming, if you somehow were attuned to recognize a CIF State pole vaulting champion in a clearance of 11 feet, 6 inches. As a freshman, Murrieta Valley’s Peter Chapman — this year’s HSGameTime boys track and field athlete of the year — wasn’t close to clearing the 16-4 that made him a state champ. He certainly wasn’t brushing up against the 16-6 1/4 that made him the Inland area’s record-holder and Arcadia Invitational champion this season. No, in his first league meet, he had his hands full with 11-6. “He came up short on the jump on his first attempt and actually got caught up on the bar and had kind of a precarious fall,” Continue reading

ESPN closing its high school business unit

ESPN is closing its high school business unit, reports SportsBusiness Daily, which includes its ESPNHS.com website, two magazines and its event management service, which staged all-star events and high school games at Disney World. With the closing in mid-September, about 75 staffers will lose their jobs.  ESPN channels will continue to air various high school games — about 30 high school football games are slated to air this fall — and espnW.com will pick up content about girls’ basketball while ESPNRecruitingNation.com will cover high school recruiting.  more

Thousands of people across Scotland have taken the opportunity to see the Olympic Flame, as the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay continues its 70-day journey around the UK ahead of this summer’s Games. The Flame arrived in Stranraer on 7 June after travelling around Northern Ireland, with the Scottish leg of the Relay beginning the following day.Scottish Sports Minister Shona Robison said: “The Torch Relay is a chance for communities to share in the Olympic spirit and support our Torchbearers. Alekna and Lavillenie continue early season consistency in Lille

Lille, France – Renaud Lavillenie confirmed his good shape with a 5.82m clearance in the Pole Vault while discus thrower Virgilius Alekna threw 69.04, the second farthest of the season, to highlight the Meeting Lille Metropole on Saturday (9), the second stop of the French Pro Athle Tour.
The Pole Vault competition was supposed to be a dual between the Frenchman Lavillenie and Olympic champion Steve Hooker. But the Australian knew quite early that things would not turn out the way he wanted.
“Today the warm-up was not good, I couldn’t find my marks, it was a hard day,” he summarised. After two misses at 5.22m, he managed to leap over 5.42m for his last attempt. However, he was unsuccessful at 5.52m, the height at which Lavillenie chose to Continue reading

Pole-Vaulters Aim for the Sky

Olympic hopefuls invest a huge chunk of their lives — energy, time, and resources — in pursuing the Olympic dream.

Everyone desires success, even though everyone has a different definition of what that specifically means. Many clichés are branded to t-shirts saying, “Believe in yourself” and “The Sky’s the Limit.” For pole-vaulters, that saying is literal. A pole-vaulter grabs a carbon fiber pole in his hands, runs at lightening speed while balancing the pole, plants the tip into the ground, and times the physics of force and speed to carry him or herself as high into the sky as possible. Every pound a vaulter carries matters and can change the dynamics of executing a perfect jump. Continue reading

2012 Junior Nationals Men’s Preview

POLE VAULT: BIG THREE TRY AGAIN — Remember the national boys’ pole vault scene as it stood back in February? Seniors Shawn Barber (Kingwood Park, Texas), Reese Watson (Spring, Texas), and Jacob Blankenship (Lincoln, Gahanna, Ohio) had all vaulted 17-6 or better, all moving into the top five all-time, and it was still not March yet. Surely we were going to see one of the greatest seasons ever in the event, with possibly three preps over 18 feet.
Well, as we’ve discovered, it doesn’t always work out that way and early-season heroics don’t always translate to a continued progression. None of the three has PR’d since Barber’s 17-8 on March 2. Not that they’ve lacked success, though. Barber who is a Canadian dual citizen who is also jumping at NBNO and whose ultimate goal is that country’s Olympic Trials recently won Great Southwest at 17-5.5, beating Watson. And Continue reading
