Spiegelburg shows promising form in Wattenscheid – German champs

Silke Spiegelburg of Germany in action in the Pole Vault finalWattenscheid, Germany – Three women produced the highlights of day one at the German Championships in Wattenscheid on Saturday. Silke Spiegelburg took the Pole Vault with 4.70m, Nadine Müller won the Discus Throw with 66.47m and Betty Heidler threw the Hammer to 73.65m. All three should be in contention for an Olympic medal later this summer in London. Weather conditions were not ideal with some rain and temperatures around and below 20 C. during the day. Spiegelburg confirmed her fine form in the Olympic season. The 26-year-old European silver medallist opened her competition with a first clearance of 4.40m. She then needed two attempts to get over 4.50m and had only one rival left in the competition. While German record holder Martina Strutz had to settle for third with 4.45 m it was Lisa Ryzih, who was challenging Silke Spiegelburg. Continue reading

German pole vaulter Danny Ecker has decided to retire at the age of 34 after withdrawing from the German championships in Bochum due to injury, it was announced on Sunday.

Ecker will compete one last time in an event in his home town of Leverkusen on August 25. He was European indoor champion in 2007 and won bronze at the world indoor championship in 1999 and at the 2007 worlds. TIME TO RAISE THE BAR

pole-vaulting.jpgTrack and Field events are fun and exciting to watch. Pole vault is probably one of the most exciting to watch because it is difficult. Form and technique make a huge difference in track and field pole vaulting and pole vaulters need excessive muscle strength, speed, mobility, agility, and flexibility. The pole is not light and it is difficult to carry while running. Without proper strength training and technique training one will not be successful in this track and field event. Many people who have tried to pole vault without being properly and adequately trained have ended getting hurt because of the risk that it involves. They thought it would just be fun to fly through the air and land in a big crash pit. Hurtling over a pole that is high in the air is not as easy as it looks. It is one of the hardest track and field events to perfect. On the other hand, it is also one of the most exciting track and field events.

Pole Grip: It matters where and how a track and field athlete grips the pole to pole vault. Continue reading
