EWU pole vaulter fails to qualify for Olympics at Alki

Keisa MonterolaAn Eastern Washington University athlete tried to qualify for the Venezuelan Olympic Team Saturday on Alki Beach in West Seattle, surrounded by pirates. It was an unusual location and unusual circumstances for pole vaulter Keisa Monterola, who was trying to qualify for London under the Olympic “B” Standard of 4.40 meters. She missed all three of her attempts.
Monterola was among dozens of pole vaulters of at the 2012 Alki Swashbuckler Beach Vault, which was happening the same time as the Seafair Pirates landing on the beach. The Pirates arrival, with their cannons going off, added a degree of distraction for the competitors.
Monterola was attempting to qualify while still dealing with the death of her brother, who was reportedly killed in a robbery near their hometown of Caracas, Venezuela last month.  more

Former ND pole vaulter named as alternate for London Games

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — A former Notre Dame pole vaulter who tried out for the London Olympics maybe heading to the games.Pole Vaulter Mary Saxer has been named as an alternate for Team USA.She placed fourth in last month’s Olympic trials in Oregon. The 25-year-old actually cleared the same height as the third place qualifier, but Saxer took an extra attempt placing her in fourth.”The fact that neither of us clear the height following that, it put her in third place because of her one less miss than me. So, it was kind of heart breaking, because fourth and third, same height… but she goes to London,” Saxer said.Even if she doesn’t get to compete in 2012, Saxer hopes to represent the U.S. in the 2016 Olympic games. more

Adirondack Aerial Assault Beach Vault in Lake George

Adirondack Aerial Assault Lake George, NY –Pole vaulting enthusiasts will have their passions realized at the first-ever pole vault competition hosted in Lake George this July. Adirondack Aerial Assault will take place on July 23rd along Shepard Park Beach; the competition, which is sanctioned by USA Track & Field, is an all-day event co-designed and organized by coaches Dennis Hogan and Don Paretta, and offers music, competitions by division, and prizes.Historically, pole vaulting began as a practical means of clearing the walls of enemies or narrow canyons. As it evolved into an Olympic sport, vaulters shifted from warriors to athletes, demonstrating the same strength and agility, but for competition. Hogan and Paretta aim to attract a diverse group of competitors to the Adirondack Aerial Assault Beach Vault by including both male and female divisions of high school, open, and elite classes.   more

Tori Pena from California to represent Ireland in the London 2012 Olympics

Irish American Olympian Tori PenaPole vaulter with a Derry-born grandmother received her Irish citizenship in 2010 Tori Pena will compete for Ireland in the pole vault competition in London in just a few short weeks. Born near Huntington Beach in California, the 24-year-old is eligible to represent Ireland through her Derry-born grandmother and got her dual citizenship in 2010 before deciding to represent the Finn Valley Athletic Club in Donegal. It’s quite a story and one which is steeped in Irish-American honor as Pena is a national record holder in Ireland and has just finished a solid campaign in Europe in preparation for the big event in London. She will compete in the Olympic A standard of 4.4 meters having excelled at the Beach Track and Field Classic in California in March and will be Ireland’s only representative in the field events at the upcoming games.Pena has publicly expressed her pride in representing Ireland but securing a medal will nevertheless be a tough task. She is ranked 10th in Europe on the back of the championships in Helsinki last week, but the Olympics will bring a new and daunting task among some of the best field athletes in the world. If she can pull it off it would be an almighty feat, recognised from the beaches of Huntington, Cali, to the hills of Donegal.
