Jenn Suhr is a step closer to Olympic gold.The Fredonia native qualified for the finals in the women’s pole vault Saturday morning, giving her a berth in Monday’s finals. Suhr, a Roberts Wesleyan graduate, won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.Suhr emerged from qualification tied for first place with Cuba’s Yarisley Silva and Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva by clearing a height of 4.55 meters. The 12 athletes that qualified for the finals all cleared 4.55, but only Suhr, Silva and Isinbayeva went through qualification without error. Isinbayeva is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.”I am excited to be heading to my 2nd Olympic final,” Suhr tweeted Saturday after the competition. “Olympic stadium is great. Big, focused crowd but does have tough winds for [pole vaulters].”Suhr is thankful to be competing in London after tearing her right quadriceps during a workout in her Riga home in May. more
