Tomeo sets bar high, clears it with a screech

Wisconsin –Amid the scattered hives of activity at a track meet, there is little to distinguish Chibron Tomeo from the other athletes chasing hundredths of a second and fractions of an inch. There is the bobbing lance of fiberglass advancing his sprint down the runway in a medieval joust with an opponent halfway to the sky. And the fact that, in the middle of his pursuit, he is upside down on a pole 16 feet in the air. But what really sets him apart is a shrill, solitary screech. From the stands. “Go Daddy!” it sounds across the field each time he rocks into motion. This is the urging of Chibron Jr., age 3, whose identification with Dad is already so complete that at home he uses a splinter of an old, broken pole to fly from the bed to another mattress on the floor. A Chibron off the old vault. College track’s postseason reaches full speed this weekend, and in Lacrosse, Wis., Whitworth will make a run at a trophy in the NCAA Division III championships, the weight of a few necessary points riding on the muscled shoulders of Tomeo, whose school record of 16-1 3/4 ranks him fourth among the event’s qualifiers. This national profile is becoming a tradition for coach Toby Schwarz’s Pirates. Chibron Tomeo, however, is anything but the traditional Whitworth athlete. “You have the kid who comes straight out of high school and Mom and Dad pay for college,” Schwarz said. “And then you’ve got Bron.” Age 26. Married to the former Erika Horobiowski. Father of a revved-up little guy. Son, brother and cousin to an extended and loving Native American family. Working man – he spent four years building fences in Spokane before Erika and both of their mothers persuaded him to go back and give school his best shot. Survivor. And not in a metaphorical sense. An actual survivor. Continue reading

Minot State U vaulter looks to bounce back

Abbey Aide understands the precarious nature of pole vaulting. A week after breaking her own Minot State University record in the event by clearing 12 feet, 6.25 inches, Aide failed to complete a successful vault in three attempts at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Championships on May 10 and recorded her first “no height” of the season. The junior from Bottineau will look to put that disappointment behind her Thursday in Pueblo, Colo., when she becomes the first MSU athlete to compete in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championship. That was too bad, but you gotta put it aside and focus, have good practices and just move on,” Aide said. “You can’t keep thinking, ‘What if I no height?’ Because it might happen again. If it happens, it happens, but you’ve gotta think more positive and go in there with a better attitude.” Since the NSIC meet, Aide has spent time training with her father, Mark, in Bottineau and doing light workouts at the MSU Dome. She said she hopes to clear 13 feet, a mark she considers both realistic and high enough to put her in the top eight, which is the cut-off for All-American status. Aide’s school record is the 11th-highest vault in Division II this season. MSU coach Stu Melby agreed that 13 feet is an attainable goal for Aide and believes it could be more than enough to put her in the top eight. Ashland (Ohio) senior Katie Nageotte enters the meet with the highest mark of the season at 14-06.75 and six others have cleared 13 feet, but Melby said only one pole vaulter at the 2012 nationals improved on her qualifying mark. “It’s a tough event and a lot of things can go on and some people may be able to deal with things that go on better than others,” Melby said. “It’s a matter of just inches that could separate eighth and 12th or eighth and 16th. It’s a fun event. It’s a very challenging event. You never know what happens, you just gotta be ready to do your best.” Aide’s best could give her family bragging rights. Abbey is still chasing the 12-11.75 mark of her sister, Kelsey, who was a four-time NAIA national champion at Dickinson State. But Abbey knows in the event of pole vaulting, nothing is guaranteed. “You could either come home All-American and beat your sister, or you can come home with a ‘no height,’ ” she said. “It happens, but hopefully it doesn’t happen with me.” more

Lacy Harris is the lone T-Wolve in national meet

Lacy Harris always has jumped with the big girls.  As she soars higher, the Colorado State University-Pueblo sophomore finds herself in the company of the NCAA Division II pole vaulting elite. Harris finds out Thursday how high she can go when she takes on the top D-II women vaulters on opening day of the NCAA’s small-college national outdoor track and field championships being held at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl. Harris ranks 10th heading into the three-day competition, which will draw nearly 900 athletes and coaches from across the U.S. She secured her berth to the national meet with a 12-foot, 6-inch vault two weeks ago at the RMAC championships. more

Bilka named D-III honorable mention

Penn State Behrend pole vault specialist Dylan  Bilka (Seneca Valley) was selected for an honorable mention NCAA Division  III male athlete of the week by the United States Track and Field and Cross  Country Association. Bilka was honored by the USTFCCCA for breaking the  school record at the Allegheny Gator Invitational. Despite facing adverse  weather conditions, Bilka cleared 5.05 meters (16-63⁄4 feet) to take first place  in the event, which included the 2013 NCAA Indoor champion. It also was the  third-best height in D-III track this season.

CSUSM’s Ayers soars in pole vault

Calah Ayer will compete in the NAIA track and field championships after setting a Cal State San Marcos record in the pole vault. (Aaron Jaffe photo, courtesy Cal State San Marcos Athletics.)SAN MARCOS, CA — Become a better pole vaulter? Yeah, there’s an app for that. This is no slight of the athleticism or hard work that have helped propel Calah Ayer, a Vista Murrieta graduate and vaulter at Cal State San Marcos, to a spot in the NAIA national championship track meet. But, in discussing the improvements that allowed her to set a personal best twice in a single meet, achieving the qualifying standard for the May 23-25 championships in Marion, Ind., Ayer noted a little high-tech help played a big part. “This year what’s actually helped is technology — the iPad, and the Coach’s Eye app that my coach uses,” said the junior, whose background in gymnastics and as a cheerleader at Vista Murrieta helped steer her to the event. “It’s the first time I’ve been able, after a jump, to sit down and use slo-mo and go through it. …“I’m a physical learner, so once I feel something and I know what it looks like, I’m like, ‘OK, I’m doing that right.’ Before, it was hard because I knew what it was feeling like, but I didn’t know what it looked like. So this year, some of my major improvements have actually come from being able to watch myself.” more
